I live on the outskirts of Houston, TX at home watching the news "Breaking Weather Alert" and can't but to think that what the northern states think about us. It is about 31 degrees F and very, very light snow which is really only experienced once a year even at that. A bunch of school districts are closed, my Mother and Sister are at my home now since there workplace are closed.

The grocery stores were busy as hell yesterday in preparation for "The Day After Tomorrow of 2014 in Texas". After reading the thread where a poster was billed a bunch of money for only a 500 sq. ft. home got me thinking about how I have my thermostat set. I usually would have it set to 75, but I lowered it to 70, and at 70, my family complains that it is chilly.

In the end, here in Texas, the cold is exaggerated to be more than it I actually is. I am sure that the regularly scheduled programs on TV will be interrupted with all day news coverage of "Snowstorm Armageddon".

Pray for me Gents.

Yeah class was canceled for me and there is a whopping centimeter of ice on my window.

I too live in houston and damn people here overreacts to the point of being annoying as hell. My gf bitched that i had to change her oil/antifreeze in anticipation of today's weather and i'm like really?? Car started just fine like i predicted.

people in Texas have no idea how to deal with snow or ice.. i was working in the ICU in December 2012 when i saw a bunch of people get admitted for walking and slipping on the ice and driving their cars into stationary objects

They closed schools in Georgia where I am for Tuesday AND Wednesday. My son is of course, happy :D

i set the stat to 65 in my house.
the beagle and i went out running this morning and it was 4 degrees F.

we get between 6inches and a foot every once in a blue moon.
3 inches is normal.

but i have students from Russia that get like 3-5 feet at a clip.
they laugh their asses off at a foot of snow.

it's all relative.
but 1-3 inches isnt anything. still need to be careful driving though.

Its currently -4 here and we are expecting a high of 2. Yes 2. There is also 6-8 inches of snow laying around.

South of Houston here.

School closed
Flights Canceled\
We actually shut down the jobsite today...

I'm so ashamed

It is not necessarily an overreaction to closing all of these public facilities. The reason is usually related to salt and/or sand resources for the roads, plows, manpower, etc.

If you don't experience snow on a regular basis (like us), there would be little to no reason for your local governments to invest in these resources.

When these freak occurrences happen, they are playing it safe.

Right now it is just below 20F in Queens NY. It has been averaging about 20-30F this month of January for us up here. We did not get much snow though. We had like 6in last week, but that is really nothing to write home about for us.

I guess you Texans are not as hardy as you claim to be.

I'm in Buffalo and I piss on your "blizzard"

The snow you got in texas - up here in Canada we basically call that amount - NOTHING.

don't mess with texas my ass; fucking pansies.

That is true, still even with all the warnings, people still driving like idiots. I think Texas is a state that is stereotyped to having aggressive drivers.

Fifteen below here in northern Illinois. I went for a run this morning, no big deal.

Is the deal that schools aren't heated down there? Is that why they have to close when it gets to the mid 30's? Or too icy for buses or what?
