Betting Questions

Not sure if it's a dumb question, but why do some of you bet like this?

Fighter X - $100 (+300)
Fighter X - $100 (+250)
Fighter X - $100 (+225)
Fighter Y - $100 (-150)
Fighter Y - $100 (-180)
Fighter Y - $100 (-250)

If you feel confident in a fighter (or their value), why not throw the full $300 to start? I understand putting a smaller amount if you think the odds are going to improve in your favor, but I see what I'm showing happen a lot. Why wait if a line is more likely to go the other way?
Opening limits are often small even at major sportsbooks like 5Dimes so you can't bet as much as you want right off the bat in a single wager when the odds come out and have to break it up into multiple bets at worse but still good value prices. Other times the price improves in the days before a fight so a bettor will add more to a side he likes as the price gets better over a period of days. Then there are other situations where you might add more after a weigh-in if you feel more confident or switch to the other side even. Also, at least when post my long list of bets for a card- which is a summary of a week's worth of wagers all typed up at once- I personally usually list the bets from best price to worst price from top to bottom on a single side, not in the order that I made the bets. It doesn't mean that I bet at worse prices, it could easily be the opposite.

Ah makes sense. I use Bovada more than anything else (should prob stop that) and I rarely see limits, probably because they're among the last to put lines out.

Apologies if these questions have already been answered earlier in this thread. I read some pages but did not go through all fifty-six.

1. Which Vegas casinos are the easiest for betting on MMA? I'm talking placing the bet (in person), cashing in, escorting the money out of the casino, etc.

Additionally, what would the "do-nots" be for these casinos? (Like things that might appear common knowledge not to do but a noob like me might make the mistake of doing.) Any cautionary tales would be appreciated.

2. Does each casino have its own odds? If so, how would I find the odds for each casino? Some Google searches revealed odds sites but not much in the way of real-time odds for specific casinos ... unless I overlooked something, which could be the case.

3. Generally, if I placed a bet long before a fight, and my bet wins, how long would I have to collect? I was thinking of flying to Vegas long before a fight to place the bet and then, if I win, waiting until the next week to fly back and collect. On that note, is there any way to insure a bet slip, or is it a matter of whoever physically possesses it is considered the lawful owner.

Thank you in advance!

Just to preface - most people here (including myself) don't do in-person betting. Online is much easier. But having gone to Vegas a few times recently, I do know a little about it.

1. I don't know if there's an "easiest" casino, but the process for all of them should be pretty straightforward. Sportsbook areas are rarely crowded tbh. You shouldn't have much trouble. I was at Mandalay and Luxor last weekend during 227 and there was hardly anyone at those areas lol. The "do-nots" I would say would just be general sportsbetting tips. Don't waste money on huge favorites, don't get too caught up with parlays, etc.

2. They do. But the odds are common between sister casinos. For example, MGM operates Bellagio, Mirage, Mandalay Bay, and a couple others. You can see the originators for each casino here to see which casinos share what. That same website gives odds between the different operators (they'll show when we're closer to an event, like here )

3. Depends on the casino. Can be 30 days, can be 120 days. Check with the casino where you place your bet. I don't think there's a way to insure your slip specifically, but you can take a picture of it. If you lose it, you can give the casino information about it so they can find it in their system. Otherwise, you can purchase a player's card, which can make it a lot more secure for you. You can apparently earn perks with them too, but I've never used one myself.

Thanks a lot! I plan to bet on just one fight.

Going back to #1, it sounds like it'd be fairly easy to book a hotel at the MGM Grand and then just walk to the casino. Does that sound about right?

A follow-up: how are cabs in Vegas? If for when I go to place the bet I just want to arrive in Vegas, get cash from my bank, then go to the casino, place the bet, stay the night, then fly out the next day, it should be pretty easy to do this with a cab, right? (Are the cabs from the airport pretty expensive?)

Again, thanks so much for your help!

Well, MGM Grand has its own sportsbook spot yeah. It's in a good spot of the strip though, not a bad walk to any of the others.

I haven't taken a cab in a while there (I drive from LA) so I'm not really sure. But the airport is right next to the strip lol. I believe the runway is literally a block away from places like Mandalay. So I can't imagine a ride being more than $10.

Thanks again! Hopefully I'm not being obnoxious with all of these questions.

Just a couple more for now: in the event that the fight I bet on gets cancelled, would there be a way for me to get a refund without my having to return to Vegas?

Or, if someone misses weight for a title fight, would that change anything?

Haha no problem.

I'm not sure if they can mail a refund to you but I would doubt that. As far as missing weight goes, that wouldn't change anything unless they cancel the fight as a result. Even for a title fight.

Do you know if casinos are able to accept or refund bets over the phone, internet, etc. witout the bettor being present? Also, what if the fight gets cancelled? Would I likely have to go and physically get my money back?

At this point, I may as well just call the casino with all these questions I'm asking ;) I appreciate your help so much, though, truly.

Well I don't know for sure but I'm almost 100% positive they can't accept bets over the phone due to state gambling laws and the need for age verification. It should automatically be given a refund status if the fight gets cancelled. But as far as having to physically go there for the refund, you'd have to check with them.

Do you use some websites for second opinion after watching tape? I usually read Bloodyelbow’s Hindsight articles, but I was wondering if there’s something better out there.

If I bet $200 and win on a -200 fighter, which would get me back $300 total (or is this wrong?), for tax purposes, do I just count my profit of $100?

betting is tax free for me so im not certain of different laws in different countries but you should have to pay tax on profit only. and yes your math is right with the return amount on that bet.

Just registered with 5dimes. Max deposit was listed at $250. Credit and debit card deposits wouldn't go through. Live chatted with CS, they said most card services would be down 2 to 3 weeks. Yikes. What a total disappointment, wanted to bet on Bellator tonight. Is Bovada any good? Used to use them here and there years ago, but account is now inactive. Didn't reactivate it because i thought they had small limits. I am green at this so i could be wrong about that. Any tips?

Never, ever, EVER use a credit card with 5Dimes or any sportsbook for that matter. Its not safe nor secure. Use Bitcoin or cash via Moneygram.

Thank you. I've been kind of pissed about opening an account and submitting all my personal info, including CC, only to be told I can't bet on the site afterwards.

Do you have some quick pointers on bitcoin? Such as where to purchase it and what wallet to keep it in? I read a bit about it today from a link 5dimes had, but as a 40 something i admit i'm a little lost/intimidated by it. Thanks for the help and advice.

I'm switching from debit cards to bitcoin, bought some btc on coinbase, I connected that to my bank account, not debit, thinking it was safer, shortIy after, I read JG's advice about not using banks or cards for any part of gambling/bitcoin. takes 6 days for your coins to be available to be sent to 5dimes.

Unless you buy with cash you kinda have to buy btc with a bank or card.. when i tried it took me an hour or 2 to get the btc in my 5dimes account. It depends on the current wait times on the block processing.
