I don't care what anyone says, it's an embarrassment to the sport to have top guys gassing out after 1 round. Maia was gassed after the first frame. You're talking about a guy who is suppose to be one of the top BJJ practitioners in MMA gassing after a round he completely dominated. Do you get that? He GASSED after a round that HE completely dominated. Not only that, he gassed after he completely dominated a round in a way that he prefers to fight (on the ground). It's really embarrassing. I was watching the fight with both casual and hardcore fans and both groups were thinking out loud "Is he tired already?" "But that was only the first round!"
I love MMA but my Lord do I hope the athleticism in this sport progresses over the next few years. Guys like Benson, GSP, Cain, Jones, Edgar, etc don't have gas tanks simply because they are the best, but because that's a prerequisite for competing successfully in any sport. It's called being an athlete. In any sport you see, Endurance is something that is shared by almost all competitors and the deciding factor tends to be skill and or other natural ability.
In MMA we see a great deal of fights being decided by a persons inability to fight with enough energy for more than one round. And it's not just the heavyweights. Guys are gassing after a round or two in almost all divisions. It's gotta get better if more people are to take the sport seriously.
