I was wondering what the best way to begin training for cardio. I frequently jump rope, but that is all. I was curious if there are any tricks for me to get the most out of my conditioning, or other cheap way to imporve cardio.

I like to jump rope too, get a speed rope and try advanced moves like double skip, cross arms, etc..

Run. Sometimes long and slow. Sometimes short and fast.

One foot goes in front of the other. Rapidly repeat with the other side.

Skipping is the best form for standup striking based sports IMO, only second to actual sparring, but for general athelticism and cardio I would suggest running. Skipping is great for striking as it replicates the bouncy movement that even standing still in a striking competition requires, keeps you on your toes, promotes muscular endurance, things like that.

maybe skipping rope/roadwork paradigm is good enough for boxing but not mma. I would advocate you read the FAQ and then read EZA's thread. You might be able to tailor your cardio to your needs a bit better with a deeper base of knowledge. At the very least you will know WHY you are doing what you are.

And when you think you're ready, try whistling while you skip.

He really needs to nail down the full skip first. I can't stand when I see guys in the gym half or God forbid quarter skipping. Add in whistling, eventually the "side to side head turn and whistle", and then, and only then can he even consider prancing.

does it have to be a jaunty tune or do showtunes or classical pieces work as well?

That's really a matter of personal preference. I find jaunty works best for me (e.g. "I'm Just Wild about Harry" is one of my go-to's). I haven't had much luck with melancholy tunes and I tend to gas with rap or heavy metal.

combination of jump rope and running are good for cardio. biking and swimming are good too if you want to let less impact on your joints.
