Here's the story, I've been wanting to improve my overall physique for as long as I can remember, Im not talking about washboard abs, huge guns, and broad shoulders, I just want to be athelitically fit and firm. I first found success in joing my highschool's wrestling team and lost about 40 lbs and gained new muscle mass and stamina. Now that I'm out of highschool and transitioning into college and life on my own, I'm worried that I'll gain back the weight and then some. So far I've only been over my wrestling weight by a couple of lbs, mostly water and general off season weight. I want to get back into that shape again but the only wrestling club in Texas is located in dallas and I do not have the time or money to spare. I've started going to the gym but I find sport and or group activities motivate me and push me the most. So Now Im seriously considering joining some martial arts class for physical wellness and if possible an MMA type class. Would anyone here know what is the best class for a physical workout ( I initially thought hey judo Ive always wanted to try it and it looks like I could pick it up pretty easy) or if even the MMA training areas that allow people to use the facilities for personal fitness reasons.

I'm also aware of the Lion's Den in dallas, but Im a bit too timid to try that (yet).

any output would be greatly appreciated and if anyone knows of a good martial arts class in the Ft Worth area that would be even better.

I apologize if Im just being a newb and posting something that has already been posted before.

also I have a pipedream of one day trying out for the olympic wrestling team in the future(yeah silly but I'm still young could happen...), so I figure train like a hopefull and maybe it could happen, and having a strong body is a ++.

again thanks in advance.

Some of your better choices would be:
MMA - this is gonna be an all around workout.
Boxing/Muay Thai - what better motivation to exercise than trying not to get punched in the face
BJJ/Judo - With your wrestling background you would probably like either of these

Depends a b it on the club rather than the style. Some are more 'recreational' paced, others have a lot of technique work, others do tons of conditioning. Personally I prefer a class to be technical & sparring focussed - I can do press ups on my own.

At a guess, I think judo might suit you best, but try a few and see what you think.

i think since you want to be an olympic wrestler, judo would suit you best. it would help your takedown game alot

The training and conditioning aspects will vary mostly by coach then club/style. Go observe and/or try out a few clubs in your area. See which one give you the workout you are looking for. Given your background chances are you'll find your answer in a competition type setting as opposed to a recreational/strip mall place. Styles that would have a higher probability of hard workouts would be boxing, muay thai, kickboxing, BJJ, judo and MMA gyms.

PLay pool, ten pin bowling, darts and shooting......All great sports for mental conditioning.

You can do it! Come on trust in yourself...

Nah but im sure it would be good and someplace I myself would want to train so...;)

Muay thai, shooto/mma hybrids, judo, wrestling, boxing, sambo, bjj you get the drift..

All that going to get you and keep you in great shape if you apply yourself to it. Which are you most interested in? That should be your answer.

well, Im more of a grappler so I would have to keep with Judo, wrestling and sambo, but I really want to improve my strikeing. I've never fully been in a fistfight but I figure throwing punches would have to be a must If I ever did any amateur MMA. Kick boxing is iffy, muy thai prolly not, Im about 5'8 and I have short stocky limbs so throwing a kick isnt my strong point, although im sure I'd be okay with GnP knees or something.

Im a dwarf myself, built like a fridge, you can still do muay thai.

Its not like you have to be master at the highkick, but it will give you exposure to fight good kickboxers, which is particulary good if your a grappler.

But man, its not like signing up for some classes are an life sentence.. just frickin try shit!:)

my guess is that muay thai would be good, at this mma gym around here they wont even let me into muay thai unless i do about half a year of 'cardio' muay thai first to get in shape for it

For MMA/BJJ/MT schools in DFW go to txmma.com.

It varies from club to club, find what you like to do then do it. Don't think too much

go with a no gi BJJ training. I am not crazy about suggesting judo. You will learn a bunch of gi techniques and sweeps that will have no bearing on gi-less grappling.
