Tom Cruise as Les Grossman has got to be one of the greatest out of character performances ever. He's mesmorizing to me.

Nice edit to change it from Rex Grossman, don’t know why but I laughed pretty fucking hard at that

I also edited the OP like 4 times now. Yikes.

Steve Carell as John Du Pont in Foxcatcher.
Steve Carell as Mark Baum in The Big Short.

How many more serious roles does he have to take before it's no longer out of character?

Dogma. He was the archbishop in jersey who wants to introduce another out of character celeb.

Yeah, but what about him being the conductor on Shiny Time Station? I’d say that was more out of character.

Ronny Cox in Robocop and Total Recall comes to mind, jesus he was scary...

I know it's out of character and an acclaimed performance but I always thought this part would have been way funnier if it had gone to Jerry Stiller as originally intended.

Albert Brooks was scary as hell in Driver.
Stallone in Copland and Cameron Diaz in Being John Malkovich both come to mind. Know primarily for their looks, they were really working without a net there.
