i have been doing bjj for maybe 6 months...my technique is pretty shotty so i just wanted to get down some solid foundations...what do you guys think is the best book or dvd that lays down all the basics well, and then might have a bit more advanced stuff...also what are the best instructionals for the guard in general??...thanks in advance

How long have REALLY been training? ;)

LOL...from what I can tell, you spend most of your time...HERE.

re: books...have you seen aesopians christmas list. check out those books.

best instructionals for the guard?!?
Thats like describing how to write.
But I suggest if you wanted something as in a book like that and want it to have more than 5 pages, then look for one with things to do from the guard. Like guard is the main topic but then they have chapters of sweeps, submissions, and attacks from the guard. If you get what i'm saying. But thats just what i'd look for, you might want something else.

I think that Renzo and Royler book from a few years ago is one of the best basics books out there. Has history, theory, and the bare minimum techniques that a white belt should know probably by their first year or so of bjj (they lay it out like different belt colors, but to me it seems more like different stripes on a while belt).

word, ill keep that in mind...i have heard good things about it...actually even my judo teacher, who kinda has something against bjj, said it was good...he then said he knew about 90% of the book from old school judo he learned in the 70's

Also Renzon's Mastering JuJitsu is a great read. Not so much focus on technique, but more on Renzo's theory and perspective.

Holy crap basisdaman, 35.26 posts per day, that ain't right..even if your arm was fucked. anyways get, Jiu-jitsu Unleashed by Eddie Bravo or might as well grab his new book.

alright, aesopian, i have checked out your christmas list and would like to ask you a few things about it...first off, you say that you like that you can reccomend The Path to the Black Belt by Rodrigo Gracie and Kid Peligro instead of the renzo and royler book...does that mean that you believe that the path to the black belt is better, and basically replaces royler and renzo's book (as in if you have path to the black belt, renzo and royler's book is barely going to add anything?)

also i would like to say that my judo teacher was also unimpressed with dave cammirillos book (i saw someone on your site say that in the comments)...i have never really checked it out, so i dont really know, but i just thought it was kinda relevant

also you recomend 2 books on guard...do they cover completely different things, so they dont really replace each other, just two different ways to play guard?

my friend is from surrey...he is a shady brown dude, and i think him and his friends kinda run your area a bit...you guys have some illllin weed over there

i believe you are correct in your assumptions of aesopians reviews.

i think he likes 'the path to the black belt' better. and he considers the 2 guard books to be different ways of playing guard.

i also suggest mastering jujitsu like hayliks said.

what do you know about this book: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Master Techniques: The Essential Guard by Rodrigo Gracie and Kid Peligro...everyone on amazon that reviewed it said it was good...im just wondering if i should grab this or ed beneville's guard book...has anyone had experience with both books??

seriously, i think that i am going to get my parents to get me 5 books for christmas...mastering the rubber guard, path to blackbelt (by kid and rodrigo), essential guard (also by kid and rodrigo), and the guard (by ed beneville) and passing the guard (by ed beneville)...what do you guys think about this??...do i need to add anything, also is there any one of these books that makes another book on the list obsolete

also, aesopian, i see you didnt include passing the guard on your christmas list, but then went on to say in another thread it was better than the guard and the rubber guard...just wondering why you left it off your christmas list then?

also, what do u guys think about BJJ BB Techniques by JJ Machado?? i heard its pretty good, worth looking into?

i think this book is great, but definitely not a beginner's book. i would say a great book for a good blue belt and higher.

what about his other book "Championship Techniques"??....have you ever looked at that?

I wouldn't get Eddie's book until you learn the basics. I see too many dudes at tournaments try the most ridiculous shit from the book or use rubber guard for 4 minutes that ends in a stalemate. I really like Saulo's instructional.

thanks for the advice...i will keep this in mind...i am going to get mastering the rubber guard, but i dont think im going to try too much of it until i really get the guard down from the other books i am planning on getting (they are supposed to be more traditional, and a bit more geared towards beginners)
