Georges has been retired for years.
Jon Jones is one of the best MMA adapted grapplers right now. He can take everyone down, but you can never take him down. Multiple submission wins from various positions. Horrifying ground and pound. However, he's a repeat cheater so theres that.
I feel like you have to go with either usman or khabib. DC gets some love, but he has Struggled vs stipe and jones with wrestling.
I’d argue jones wrestling is currently a compliment to his many other weapons but isn’t dominant in the way we see someone like khabib walk into the octagon and basically say “I’m gonna take you down and smash you. That’s my plan, that’s what will happen, try and stop me”
my bet is DC
Khabib by far
Jon has a much deeper and more varied set of tools compared to Khabib, who is a specialist. If Jon had to only rely on wrestling to decision wins, he could do it.
Go back and review Jon's overall record and count up the number of guys he literally smashed on the ground.
I don’t disagree it’s high level. I don’t disagree he can wrestle almost anyone. But we’re comparing these guys who are all amazing we gotta work with what we got. I see more intricate, detail orientated adjustments from khabib that are genius. And he does it every..single..fight. That’s powerful, and hard for me to pick a guy that uses his wrestling when it’s most suitable, vs a guy that uses it no matter what
None of the above mentioned bums even won an AMATEUR Wrestling or grappling (aside from Maia) championship or Olympic gold medal.
CM Punk was the professional wrestling
Open weight champion of the fucking world!
So we are on the same page, far and away out wrestling Daniel Cormier is more impressive then any opponent Khabib has ever faced. Khabib was completely stuffed by Tibau over 3 rounds (in a controversial decision) and was taken down by a NAIA wrestler in Trujilo. If you are unfamiliar with amateur wrestling, NAIA is roughly equivalent to NCAA Division 2/3.
I would also add that overall "grappling" isn't just wrestling. Jon didn't just take Machida down, he then assaulted him with a head splitting elbow. Soon after he would jump on a standing guillotine and then drop Machida's lifeless body to the canvas. That is all grappling and Khabib has not remotely shown those types of abilities.
Also to be clear, Khabib is the best wrestler in his division and one of the best MMA adapted wrestlers of all time.
Still salty about George making nick his wife
Georges is in my opinion, the single best MMA adapted grappler in the history of MMA.
However the guy has been retired for years. Obviously he can't be the best grappler in the UFC.
DC or Khabib
AKA run grappling in the UFC
Yeah man, no doubt khabib hasn’t had a DC to fight, but my counter point is that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have that ability. Right? Just cause you haven’t done something doesn’t mean you can’t or won’t.
I’d be able to agree the jones has a more aggressive ground game. When he gets guys down he puts them away. There’s very little laying, and a whole lot of damage.
Khabib has one me from smaller actions than hellacious elbows or crazy chokes. If you watch his fights super closely, his situational actions are insane. In the Poirer fight, Dustin is down and he’s got himself finally up against the cage. Thank god cause he can now look to his corner (across the octagon) and get some help. He can now see the timer. Khabib immediately covers his eyes and starts slapping him in the ears. Just the mental demoralization of working your way up to a fence like that and the guy immediately denies such a minor advantage is HUGE. Not only that, he covers your mouth, this isn’t a safe space. There is NO safe space. Because he has you in his world. That to me is why he’s so dominant.
So I guess we do after all agree except that I would value an mma grappler skill set higher than you. But it was a whole lot of fun discussing with you and really enjoyed the conversation.
Khabibs grappling has significantly evolved since the fights you have mentioned.
