2) Arthur Dayne

Arthur was the deadliest of the seven knights of Aerys's Kingsguard.

His title Sword of the Morning is a title of House Dayne bestowed on the knight who bears their ancestral greatsword Dawn. The Sword of the Morning is always a member of House Dayne. The title is not necessarily passed to the lord of the house, but to the knight considered most worthy to wield it, as decided within the House. Dawn is said to be made from metal forged from the heart of a fallen star. The blade is said to be just as sharp as Valyrian steel.

"The finest knight I ever saw was Ser Arthur Dayne, who fought with a blade called Dawn, forged from the heart of a fallen star. They called him the Sword of the Morning, and he would have killed me but for Howland Reed." - Ned Stark

"I learned from Ser Arthur Dayne, the Sword of the Morning, who could have slain all five of you with his left hand while he was taking a piss with the right." - Jamie Lannister

This has been prefigured for a while.....Dayne by besmirchment.

I had fun with this one but it had the unfortunate issue of being too predictable. After this one is over there's still a few tournaments that we can do;

A B-Level version where some of the GOATs are excluded, one with all the major houses. This was recommended as a good 8 option tournament:

Unsullied
Dothraki
2nd sons
Wildlings
Kingsguard + Gold cloaks (since theres only 7 members of the kingsguard)
Brotherhood without banners
Hill tribes of the Vale
Nights watch

The guy who is barely mentioned in the books/show will win...........he always does.

If anyone has the time and can do polls i would love to see a thread on who will win the game of thrones by it being.
fighting vs fighting
brains vs brains
brains vs fighting

I love to see peoples opinions on battles like littlefinger vs varyrs if they meet in the brackets we could use this

Another option that could work. Just have to get the right number of participants down.

Martin has already said that Dayne with Dawn has the advantage. Should be an easy final round.

That's always the argument......doesn't really mean anything.

Selmy just because I hate the idea of Dayne winning. Yeah...I know what GRRM said...don't care. I'd rather have an actual character present in the books be the champ instead of some guy that everybody says was awesome.

How doesn't this "really mean anything". The guy who created the characters and wrote the books already explained who would win in this match-up and why. Barristan Selmy should have 0 votes.

Selmy based on achievments and not getting killed in combat.

Dayne's barely done anything aside from defeating the Smiling Knight who 15 year old Jamie Lannister was holding his own against.

It's still heresay.

It should be based on the literature. Whatever GRRM says in interviews isn't the be all and end all. Probably just how he felt at the time...........if he didn't write it in his novels, it is merely speculation.

..........and Selmy didn't get killed by Ned Stark.

GRRM said skillwise they're about even, the only difference is Dawn. With equal weaponry it's a coinflip.

This doesn't even make sense. You do realise that Arthur Dayne and Barristan Selmy are the fruits of GRRM's imagination. He decides who wins, who is stronger, faster etc.

Yes.......but you should judge by what is actually written in the novels. That is all that should count.

Pretty much this. Selmy has a broader range of skills as well with his ninja work and commanding armies.

Selmy is a legend, but I'm gonna have to go with The Sword of the Morning. I view the skill of both at about =, but Dawn might just be the deal breaker in the fight.
