ok my fellow sherfriends,
i was wondering what you would recommend (boxing gloves/glove weights) for cross training with no gi BJJ. still confused? ill explain:

i used to train a lot with a couple friends at my home gym where one guy would wear boxing gloves and freely drop bombs, while the other guy had to take him down, avoid the punches, and go for submissions. im sure a lot of you guys have done this as well.

my question is: most importantly, what glove weight do you guys think would be ideal here? i like the safety of the 16oz gloves, but then again, i dont like the size of them (too easy to trap the arms for the no gi guy). i like the size of the 12's... but, will they be too hard? should i just settle with 14's?

thanks guys, i wasnt sure where to post this, and did a search and found nothing. i post mostly in the grappling forum, so i figured why not post it here. any help would be appreciated! thanks!

12 oz. is fine and slit that thumb/forefinger webbing. So you can start with standup striking and work takedowns and most submissions when on the ground and your opp can still knock the shit out of you. That is what we use.

I've always thought that 16oz gloves were the "standard" for sparring(?) In my opinion 12 oz is too small unless you guys like to get hit hard[er] (^_^)

exactly my dilema... 12's seem to be really stiff... 16's are really nice, but theyre also really big for this type of training. im thinking either 14's are 16's. it would be nice to train without head gear, but i figure if i do go with 14's, then well most likely wear headgear, and we wont with 16's.

as far as "just buy mma gloves," no man.. youre not getting the point. do you train full on with mma gloves regularly? if so, youre either a liar or the toughest guy on earth.

Most people don't train this way. There are usually two ways to go about training what you're trying to train. One is that both fighters have boxing gloves(usually 16 oz) and they are both wearing headgear. They both throw pretty hard and try to work takedowns. The second way is with MMA gloves(shooto style is better here, as the chance of getting cut is almost nothing). When you're wearing the MMA gloves, you can't throw hard standing up, but you can go pretty hard on the ground. If you're serious about this, you'll want to use a mix of the two types of training I just described.

Frodo's glove suggestion is awesome. I trained with them for the first time this weekend. As with everything I've seen from Combat Sports, they are top notch.

I agree with Frodo's choice for mixing grappling and striking. They are more realistic than boxing gloves because they have less bulk, but they still provide quite a bit of padding and protection.

Pretty much the only reason to spar with boxing gloves for MMA is to avoid the possibility of getting thumbed in the eye by accident. Even if you are training just standup striking, you might as well use MMA gloves instead of boxing gloves because they are smaller and more realistic. You can sort of hide behind the bulkier boxing gloves and defend in some ways that won't really work when smaller gloves are used.

Reading comprehension is key here. The guy was trying to help out, no reason to call him a liar. Also he was not talking about MMA fight gloves. The combatsport MMA training gloves have the exact same padding/protection as a 16 oz boxing glove.

Obvious helpful answer to an easy question.

no.. it was a simply misunderstanding, not a fault in reading comprehension. i had no idea they made gloves as padded as boxing gloves for mma. those combatsports gloves actually look PERFECT for the training im looking to do. thank you everyone, i think im going to buy a set of 16oz gloves for standup.. and those combatsports mma gloves for contact BJJ. thanks again everyone. thanks jason.

does anyone have these gloves?

I own them too, and they are pretty good. After 6 months they seem to have held up pretty well. I got blisters the first time I wore them. OTOH, I have very small hands. After breaking them in and making sure to keep them tight, that was never a problem again. I highly recommend those gloves (otherwise, I wouldn't have linked to them too lol).
