Sen. Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign staff is apparently engaged in their very own fight for $15, according to the Washington Post. Due to overwork, the staffers, who are one of only a few unionized campaign staffs, say they are making less than the living wage that their campaign is promising to all Americans.

Documents obtained by the Post show ongoing negotiations between the union, represented by United Food & Commercial Workers Local 400, and the campaign management starting in May. The two parties still haven’t reached an agreement about a higher wage for campaign workers. According to the Post, it’s unclear whether Sanders himself is aware of the situation.

The union said in a statement that it couldn’t comment “on specific, ongoing internal processes between our members and their employer.”

From the Post:

“As union members, the Bernie 2020 campaign staff have access to myriad protections and benefits secured by their one-of-a-kind union contract, including many internal avenues to democratically address any number of ongoing workplace issues, including changes to pay, benefits, and other working conditions,” the statement said.

“We look forward to continuing to work closely with our members and the management of the Bernie 2020 campaign to ensure all workers have dignity and respect in the workplace.”

But according to the Post, the union is in the process of drafting a letter to Sanders campaign manager Faiz Shakir demanding higher wages.

In the letter, the union writes that campaign staffers “cannot be expected to build the largest grassroots organizing program in American history while making poverty wages. Given our campaign’s commitment to fighting for a living wage of at least $15.00 an hour, we believe it is only fair that the campaign would carry through this commitment to its own field team.”

The letter alleges that field organizers are working a minimum of 60 hours a week, bringing their actual wages down to an average of $13 an hour. The letter said “many field staffers are barely managing to survive financially, which is severely impacting our team’s productivity and morale. Some field organizers have already left the campaign as a result.”

From the Post:

Field organizers, who are on the front lines of the campaign’s crucial voter contact efforts, were to be paid not by hours worked but via an annual salary set at $36,000. Regional field directors were to be paid $48,000 annually, and statewide department directors were allocated $90,000 per year.

Update:
Bernie Sanders Refuses To Increase Staff Wages, CUTS HOURS Instead

In a statement provided to Newsweek, Shakir said that the campaign has been in discussions about pay structure changes with the United Food & Commercial Workers Local 400, the union representing the organizers.

"We look forward to continuing those discussions and obviously are disappointed that some individuals decided to damage the integrity of these efforts before they were concluded," Shakir said. "As these discussions continue, we are limiting hours so no employee is receiving less than $15 for any hours worked."

Bernie should redistribute his wealth to his workers imo, fair is fair.

$15 an hour? Do those ingrates not realize that Sanders has a third home to pay for? Inconceivable!

Bernard addressed the article this evening and seems to be bitter that workers have the audticy to use the media to help their cause:

"In his statement, Sanders said he was frustrated that information about the labor difficulties had been publicized.

“It does bother me that people are going outside of the process and going to the media,” Sanders told the Register. “That is really not acceptable. It is really not what labor negotiations are about, and it’s improper.”

He added, “We are disappointed that some individuals have decided to damage the integrity of these efforts. We are involved in negotiations. And some are individuals that have decided to damage the integrity of that process before they were concluded.”

Bernie, why didn't you decline the tax cuts for the millions you made on selling your shitty book bashing capitalism? Why don't you pay your employees the rate you're demanding everyone else pay? Why aren't you following anything you're demanding of everyone else? Why did your hero Fidel Castro have $900 million in off shore accounts while the average citizen made $25/month?

This is why I want as many Cubans and Soviet block people here as possible. They don't fall for any of your shit cause they've seen it before.

Thats what they would do in Scandinavia...

Norway has the third-highest per capita income in the world, maintains universal health care and a comprehensive social security system. It has one of the world's lowest crime rates and the world's largest sovereign wealth fund, with a value of over US $1 trillion. It has held the highest Human Development Index ranking in the world since 2009 and currently ranks first on the Gini Equality Index, OECD Better Life Index, Index of Public Integrity, and Democracy Index.[19][20][21][22][23][24][25]

That would be the immense natural resources juxtaposed with a very small and largely homogeneous population, but... and I can't really speak for the others out of unfamiliarity (@Son of Jamin & @Prutfis) Norway does have a direct wealth tax and VAT rate of 25%. The government tax revenue as a percentage of GDP is the highest in the world at a whopping 55%, far above OECD average (34.8%) and more than twice that of the United States (27%).

Just to clarify, it is his interns he pays $12 an hour. They are college students or recent graduates who are looking to get into congress. Also minimum wage does not apply to interns according to The Fair Labor Standards Act.

Socialism? More like social schism.

Ba dum tss. Corporate comedy.

No, he pays lowest level staffers 36k a year, which should equal out to 15 an hr ... problem is he works them 60+ hours a week which is less per hour.

He needs to offer time and a half. I couldn't read to post article, it required pay. But I found it. Yeah that is scummy if true.

Yeah, no shit it's true. It's been true for over 100 years. Alexa, what is the holodomor that no Ukrainian under 40 seems to know ever happened and thought their grandparents died of old age at 44?

He should know interns struggle then most people and should pay him fair living wages no excuses. The double standards of that old white rich guy is un real

I understand what you're saying. But I doubt you expect any other rich men or cooperation to pay people a living wage.

What a weak smear attempt.

Setting aside the details of this actual case, which is a non-story, the man is running on a platform of tuition free college. He literally put forth legislation forgiving all student debt which would save students trillion of dollars. He's the only one out of any candidate on either side who has done that, ever. He also almost single handedly raised wages for Amazon workers with his STOP BEZOs act. Not to mentioned marched with the Walmart workers and is putting pressure on their CEOs to raise wages again.

To imply that he's not, by far, the best candidate when it comes to workers right and student economy is completely nonsensical. You literally have to squint your eyes so hard that you distort reality, which is what you're doing here. Trying to grasp at straws.

Bernie should not be blamed for this at all. As someone who's worked extensively in politics I'm 99.99% sure that the person at fault is some power happy supervisor who's overworking his people to make themselves look good. Most toxic person I've ever worked with in politics worked on Bernie's campaign(this was a local campaign in NY I know because of the sticker) and basically scammed me out of my money I was owed(part of a very long story). He worked for Bernie but that in no way, shape or form has anything to do with him and political campaigns are a magnet for assholes who are clawing for a job in an administration or staff cause it's a way to get a good living off of six months to a year of hard work. I believe them but feel them going to the press is undercutting the cause they believe in, they'd totally have had their complaints heard if they'd went around the dude(in any environment, you'll always find people willing to backstab someone else, it's why I hate working in politics).

There's great people working in politics too some of the greatest people I've met worked for Bernie. It's like being a cop I guess the motivations for doing the work come from opposite ends of the moral spectrum and you tend to find great people or world class pieces of shit with little in between.

And yeah there is no way in hell Bernie would say no to paying his workers 15 dollars an hour, not just cause of his position on that issue but his campaign made it such a point last time to make it clear they weren't cutting corners(the quality of their shirts and products was something else). Least stingy campaign I ever worked on. Only political experience I ever enjoyed and don't have horror stories from(though I'm sure the people working for person I mentioned above have a different take).

LOL @this shit

On the one hand I laugh that he doesn't even pay his employees $15 an hour, or a living wage as they call it. That ain't gonna cut it in Vermont with the insane taxes.

However, they are paid a salary. When you move to that pay scale hours don't mean shit. You are being paid to do a job regardless of the time it takes.
