Beneil filmed a youtube lesson for my channel breaking down the basics of the open guard he uses.

I know some may throw a fit because he only has 3 years of grappling experience and showing a move on youtube. I think his accomplishments speak for themselves however and this guard has a large role to play in it. For the next 100 subscribers ill get another cool guest to teach. Thanks for the support form Benny and myself.

Cool video, he makes it sounds pretty simple. I would've liked seeing the move from another angle, too. Maybe something you can do for your next vids?

As would I. I guess it is what it is for now. Sometimes when you get going with teaching you forget about the best way to show it to the camera.

Thanks for sharing. I took away some new things from this after watching.

But does he really refer to it as the Dariush guard?

murilo bustamantes guard, commonly called the traditional open guard by most brazillians.

Great instructional Thanks. Fits right into my game.

Beneil is a sick competitor and a super nice guy. I was fighting in the finals at the Copa Pacifica earlier this year without a coach. Beneil started coaching me just because he saw I didn't have anyone in my corner. We didn't know each other and he didn't have any reason to help me out but he did. So I'll always root for the guy from now on.

cool story. Hes way meaner when you train together =)

SheerTechnique, You know just as well as I do it doesnt matter if the guy knows its coming!

Cool story. I remember training with a bunch of well known bjj guys and they were all sitting around talking about how to stop benny from doing this. One week later one of them came in and said "I used my best pass and I was like 'i got you now' and he freaking circled his leg under again, went inverted guard and then circled back to that darn stretching you out guard!"

I love this position, but I think I grab a same side grip on the lapel. I should switch to a cross grip. Lots of collar drags seem possible from there.

If I am the guy standing in his open guard, why would I grab the cuff of his pants? it seems like that i would be locking myself into him controlling me.

I would be grabbing inside of his pants by the knee. He went over this counter, but if it was countered i would work to get that back. I would not let him counter me like this and just be like "ok, i will just grab your cuff and basically give you sleeve/bicep control".

maybe I am wrong, but that is just my thought about this.

this vid looks kinda like the stuff from the one cyborg dvd (without the foot on the bicep)

Truly outstanding. I've been a Benny fan for a while now =]
I recently asked him on facebook about spider guard (leg lasso vs sleeve & lapel), and he explained it quite well to me! Unfortunately though I've still been struggling with it. This video helps a lot though!

    Mucho Thanks to you both!

Okay, after watching this video of him fighting with this offensive style open guard, I can see why your gym calls it the Dariush guard!

    His hip movement is amazing.

Sebastian is really an amazing competitor as well and this years open weight/weight purple belt mundials champion as most of you already know. Its really impressive how he can turn on the pressure on guys in the open weight after winning his division. Hats off to him for his victory over benny.
