this is what he wrote in his facebook account.

Going through the testing for my Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tonight at my gym, the MMALab. This is very important to myself and my BJJ coach, John Crouch, because it's not about just being tough in a gi but it's more about knowing the technique created by Helio Gracie, being able to teach the technique to a 50 year old mother and being confident that she'll be able to defend herself and get away should she ever be attacked. We too easily forget that BJJ was created as a Martial Arts defense, it's doesn't matter if you can pull-guard then hit an advanced 'sport' jiu-jitsu move (De La Riva sweeps or Berimbolo sweeps), doesn't really matter if you can choke everyone out in a MMA fight but can you teach the proper technique that will end up saving someone's life???
It's been a long and fun journey that I've had a blast on these past 6 years, I'm grateful for where BJJ has helped lead me and to all of the friends and my fianc'e that I've met through BJJ.

Awesome.

Awesome, would be fun to watch him compete at black belt.

Cool, good for him

A Bendo story:

My team wrestled Bendos team my sr year. We beat them in that match 84-0. I wrestled Benson and I ended up beating him 15-0 in the 2nd round. He came up to me and shook my hand and said I was the best guy he had ever wrestled, but he was going to work hard and it would be a different story the next time we wrestled.

Fast forward 3 months later and I wrestled him again at districts. I noticed he was kicking everyones ass and had made some real improvements. I beat him this time 15-0 in the 3rd round. He shook my hand again and said good job.

Fast forward 3 years later and I had worked out with him a few times at freestyle. I was struck with how good of an attitude he had and how hard he worked. He won state that year, while the best I did was 3rd, and he went off to college.

Fast forward 2 years later. My college team wrestled his team. I saw him walk out and it was against one of our best guys. I knew our guy was good, but I had remembered how hard Benson worked. He beat our best guy by 15 points and HE WENT UP A WEIGHT FOR THAT MATCH!! 2 months later, Benson actually ended up finishing higher than I did that year.

As soon as I heard he was in the WEC, I knew this dude would do really well simply because he has the best attitude and doesnt ever quit. I actually hope he takes BJJ a little more serious because I am really interested in how he would do if he put his mind to it.

Thank you for sharing that story Mr. Dirty, much appreciated.

Also, great post by him, seems like a class act.

Wow that is an awesome story, and a lesson for everyone who wants to be the best at what they do.

I love his attitude towards training, I love his attitude towards BJJ as exemplified by that quote at the top, and I wish him the best. I'm more of a fan of his after reading this thread.

Great story man.

As per Holts story. Hendo seems like a cool guy with a good head on his shoulders. On top of being athletically gifted, which is what it takes to be a champ.

Would like to see him compete in BJJ as a BB

celebs give congrats

a bit of a side question: why do some gyms give belt "tests" while others base it more on instructor observation? and along these lines, why do some that give a test seem to make it about a demonstration of moves, similar to TMA bs, whereas others will make you fight for it? is there a standard for belt promotion? how do the gracies do it?

This thread is full of win.

So Bendo can teach old ladies self defence, eh? Can he teach me his single leg defense?! (I think I might need to stretch a little more regularly )

Congrats to him, awesome accomplishment.
