Could the best version of Ben Askren beat Usman? What do you think?

Ok I'll bite... probably not.

And this is from a dedicated Askren fan.

Usman is simply too large. Askren could probably make 155 if he wanted and Usman is simply too big and has crazy cardio.

Askren has far better wrestling credentials but there is a reason there are weight classes in wrestling

The best version of Ben Askren would get absolutely embarrassed and finished by Usman, Colby, GSP, Hendricks, and pretty much every elite welterweight ever.

Prime Askren gets his takedowns stuffed and destroyed on the feet by Rick Story, Mike Pierce, Josh Koscheck etc.

I promise I'm not trying to troll. I just wanted to hear what people think. I watched a few of his old matches today and he looked a lot stronger than I thought.

Askren had great grip strength and a very unorthodox wrestling style. It translated well to MMA and he has some wins against very credible opponents.

Problem is here on Sherdog there are a shit ton of Askren haters who take delight in shitting on him.

As such this thread will devolve pretty quick.

What's the reason for the hate? I'm curious. Askren seems like a likeable guy. He's a bit of a smart mouth but often times he's not too far from the truth.

No.

Askrens stand up is a hot fucking mess.

Marty has enough wrestling cred to keep shit standing, and chew him up.

He's smarter than most Sherdoggers and they can't understand his sarcastic humor.

Also he made Masvidal into a star while making him look like an idiot and people fail to understand that Askren sold that fight, not Mas.

Plus a controversial win over Robbie who is a fan favorite here probably didn't help matters.

No but I'd tune in!

Ooos isn't going anywhere for some time...

It simply irritates people that a guy who achieved practically nothing in MMA is spoken of in the same breath as fighters who were champions at the highest level. And this kind of talk persists even after Askren was proven beyond doubt to be mediocre in the UFC.

So talk of his greatness is one of those issues that seems so ludicrous when people refuse to back down from it. A bit like creationism and climate change denial.

Huge NCAA fan... I know Askren had a terrible time making 163lbs for 2008 Olympics and he was sort of sluggish because of it. His body type is just unchangeable we all gotta accept that

Undefeated for a decade; champion of two different orgs; tons of great wins during his streak, 2 time NCAA champion... “achieved practically nothing.”

Sherdog for ya.

Yep in the context of UFC champs, that stuff is practically nothing. You insult the likes of GSP, Silva and even Usman by reducing their achievements to something on a par with Askren's.

He'd have had more of a chance than most would give him credit for. If he could survive Robbies shots he's get a chance to try and grapple with Marty. But that's not saying much. I defended him after Masvidal fight, believed he'd have beaten Masvidal if not for a flukey KO. But he retired after the Maia fight for a reason.

Marty's honestly very likely going to be WW GOAT after another fight or 2 and only reason people ain't saying it now is cause they don't want to jump the gun like with Woodley. Just so well roundely good.

I hate to say this as an Askren fan but his UFC stint left him looking somewhat exposed

I mean he wasnt old when he came to the UFC where did his prime go because his UFC stint didnt look like it
