News Ben Askren in critical condition

Shit, I see subspecialties argue amongst themselves (particularly in the ICU) with patients dying a meter away about random med changes and goals of care on a daily basis. Sometimes they even throw hands (see the nephrologist vs. cardiologist throwing hands over lasix).

But yeah, prob not the time. Apologies for the derail. Hope Ben pulls through.

To be clear, having an actual physician give knowledgeable comments is both useful and appropriate in a thread like this. There is utility for other readers getting good information to contextualize what is being reported.

Whoever the nutbar, angry NP (or tech who knows) is the problem, certainly not you.

I assumed you were NHS when referring to consultant, just saw you are Aussie. Its interesting getting a perspective outside the USA system, you got a little taste of 'mid-level creep' here lmao.

Thanks doc

For those of you who only know Ben from MMA let me reiterate just how good he is for American folk style and freestyle wrestling at the middle school and high school level (which is where it all starts). The dude does so much good in that area. It would be a blow for the entire wrestling community to lose Ben. He is one of the good guys in the sport.

It's incredible that I believe Askren youth academy kids would have finished top 4 in the NCAA national team race against all the universities last year if you just scored them alone. Wisconsin was never really elite, and in 10 years he has them in the elite class singlehandedly. He also makes the sport enjoyable for his athletes instead of strictly running them into the ground thinking toughness is the most important thing for a wrestler over skill sets.

This thread started Saturday and now it's Tuesday - not sure what to make of that. 3 days with no positive or negative update

You can only read it if you're signed in, which is weird, but here's a screenshot. I wish she'd at least say he's stable or a little more detail, but at least it's not the worst of news.

From reading this thread, I can see that Ben Askren is an even bigger part of his community than I could have guessed, not just ours here when talking about all time great hairlines in the sport. From years of hearing the guy talk, outside of his playful trolling he's always seemed like a down to earth guy with a positive view on things. I know that if he were reading about any fighter or fan in his condition, he'd be rooting for them to recover, so we owe him this at the very least.

What I think of Askren as fighter is entirely different that of his person. His Podcast conversations with Daniel Cormier really opened my eyes the past few years of him, he’s great for wrestling and what he offers for his community, i hope he gets through this and recovers his health.

Got a link to that pod? Thanks in advance.

Haha, dw, the scope creep is making its way up in Aus too. With govs pushing it more each day.

Almost like there was nothing learned from the NHS/US systems :/

Prayers to him. Hoping he pulls thru.

Had an MRSA infection on my knee. Its scary watching a wound not heal for a 10 days with IV medication.

The boil popped and thought all the pus and gunk was drained but didnt get all out and it kept getting bigger. Finally a old doctor who probably seen everything just straight up cut me open with no anesthesia and made sure to drain everything pus, gunk.. was painful as fuck but after that it finally started to heal thought to myself I was lucky to have had that doctor in the ER that day.

Never had a staph, I can only imagine tlhow scary watching your body get eaten alive by bacteria. Those antibiotics resistant bacterias are a thing of nightmares.

Hope Asken gets better.
Sorry if I bring back bad memories, but may I ask how you got MRSA? Would definitely like to have some advice on avoiding that.

If I had to choose between being a boxer or an MMA fighter, I choose boxing every time. Staph is something I just can't reconcile with. My flesh potentially rotting away? Fuck that. And it's EXTREMELY common amongst MMA fighters. AFAIK, unheard of amongst boxers.

I'll be thinking of him. Hope he recovers. 👍
It's the grappling. I also have a feeling it may have to do with some people having poor hygiene like not showering after practice.
