Have you guys ever had jiu jitsu belt tests? I've never heard of it before but the school Im going to start going to, have belt tests... I didn't have a test when I got a blue but I got whipped by the whole team after... LOL had boils on my back for a few days.

If you guys have had, what's it like? how do they test you?

from all the reading i've done on the forums i don't think there's a belt test for Jiu Jitsu. I've Seen belt tests for TKD stuff but for JJ aren't they mostly how well your instructor thinks you've improved? maybe i'm wrong.

exactly, thats what I know... but I was reading this one seminar that included belt tests.... and I was just wondering what it was..

Some instructors will require that you can do x amount of sweeps functionally, have an understanding of x amount of positions, be able to apply x amount of submissions and what not. Others just give you the belt because they feel you are ready for it.

"tests" are fun.. but my back and ass hurt from all the whipping ;)

Tests in BJJ are hard I think. The reason is, there is no form of kata or routines.

It's not like tae kwan do where you gotta be able to do these kicks and punches from

these stances.

At my school, we get tested but don't know it until after the fact.

The last time I saw it done, the instructor had a high level white belt grapple a blue belt in front of the entire class. After the white belt got tapped, the instructor told him (in private) that he had just been tested and was not quite ready to move on to the next level and that he needed to improve in certain areas.

Some schoolls use tests... ussually there is no belt testing in bjj.

i have to test to get to purple, but i always have to work when it is test time, or i havent trained in a while and i dont feel i deserve it yet.
i really dont care to take a test , but oh well.

we have to test for blue, but after that it switches to normal promotions.

My friend trains under an Rickson Gracie Assoc. and they have belt tests.

I really wonder what you base that on, with my avatar and everything..

I didn't have a belt test. After about 9 months of bjj at 4-5 times a week, and having beaten a blue belt at a open belt ( from white to black basically) bjj competition, I got promoted to blue by my brasilian instructor. Usual shit: After training, he called me over and the whole class whipped me with their belts, the instructor finished it off with a huge hit on my ass with a bamboo stick. Classic shit...

In the SBGi BJJ association, belt "tests" are mostly just you grappling a couple of guys from the level you are aming for in front of the instructors. You don

The School where I train has a belt test. The belt you are testing for determines how extensive your test is. When I got my Blue the test was as follows (may not be 100% accurate, I'm going off memory)

10 subs from the top
10 subs from the guard
4 subs from the back
4 escapes from the mount
4 guard passes
4 escapes, opponent has your back
4 sweeps
4 takedowns

12 minute round robin.

When you test for your purple it is double, brown is double the purple. The Black belt test is not posted at our school, but knowing how my Instructor is, the test is probably an adventure through hell.

stuff like that seems dumb to me,that means gettin brown you would have to do 40 subs from top and guard, but knowing a bunch of moves isnt as good as bein good at like 2-4 from each position that u can pull on anyone,i dont agree with belt tests
