Knew he was going to Bellator but I'm surprised UFC didnt even bother to offer him a deal. Not that he would take a big paycut when Coker will pay him but maybe UFC decided instead of him rejecting a small offer they say we dont even want you anymore.
With him being a Zinkin guy he was gonna leave and UFC knew it.
Good signing for them, Bellator needs some names for Brooks to fight. I'd love to see Chandler fight but probably will book him in some squash matches to get him some wins.
The UFC has declined to re-sign Josh Thompson. Thompson is expected to reunite with Scott Coker in Bellator, according to mmafighting
First fight vs Chandler would be great
Hell yea! Thomson looks to be on the decline, but he could provide some quality fights.
Def can put on fun fights.
Chandler, Pitbull, Saad, Brooks, Held, Jansen, even Melvin.
Brooks and Chandler I think might be out of reach right now and they probably start him off with a low level guy to get a win but if he wins a fight then Pitbull, Saad and maybe Chandler would be options.
Awesome, was worried he might retire. Looking forward to see how he fares.
He's old in a stacked division but I'm glad he isn't retiring. He still has some left in the tank imo. If Guillard wins his fight match em up.
Thomson is pretty under-rated atm. He lost two questionable decisions recently, I thought he beat the champ... but he's still 1-4 in his last 5 and not even in the UFC's top 15 for rankings.
If he beats Brooks, then it (deceptively) makes UFC's LW's look way better than Bellators. UFC didn't make him an offer to devalue his stock even more, and to save face. They sent Bonnar over to try and discredit Tito... I can see why UFC did it, saves them some money too.
I look forward to seeing Josh in Bellator
Pretty cool, he was probably planning on going there since the Reebok deal got made. Happy for him
I like this signing.
sad times. used to be all over thomsons bandwagon but plagued so hard with injuries and his last performances have been subpar. tough to fight in the deepest division in mma.
sidenote: weird that sherdog has him listed at 153.
I'm surprised he hasn't retired by now. He's thought about it before.
I get the feeling he won't be the first of many fighters not to re-signed with the UFC. I'm confident Tim Kennedy will sign with Bellator and maybe Bendo(on his fb he's been liking a lot of articles against the Reebok deal)
Great addition to Bellator LW division. Thompson can still bang IMO. The division just passed him by.
It's good for all parties. A lot like Phil he's worth way more to Bellator than he was the UFC. Josh is always fun to watch, was never really blown out by anyone. Just started to decline slightly.
With Melvin, Josh, Brooks, Chandler, and Held plus some other solid guys. 155 has gone from a relatively top heavy and weak division to one with several interesting match ups.
It's a good day, fellas.
I saw Thomson say in an article that the UFC tried to re-sign him his last 2 fights, but he declined and wanted to fight his contract out. Says the UFC is just trying to save face.
I'm more incline to believe him than them.
They probably just tried to resign him at the same price or less and he either figured he'd win one of those fights and bump up his stock or he'd head out for Bellator.
I'm sure the UFC wanted him back just not enough to pay him a lot considering he's aging and on a three fight losing streak. Where as for Bellator he is a big coup.
Separate names with a comma.
