It's too spaced out. Doesn't feel like a tournament. Nobody but the die hards are following.

they tank hard with anything they build up

If I remember right, the Strikeforce hw grand prix took forever too. It definitely takes excitement out, with the next fight night being until the damn end of April.

I understand that 1 night tournaments are really hard on fighters, so those are a thing of the past. I also get that Bellator thinks they can put a tournament fight on the card, and hopefully draw more eyes to the card (and their other homegrown talent).

However, I don't get why they didn't pair chael-rampage (big seller) and mittrione-nelson (dunno how many outside hardcore fans care about) on 1 card. Then, have mir-fedor (seller) and bader-mo (hardcore) on the same card later on. This would optimize viewing, and still let the tournaments not be so spaced out. Then, both semis should be together on the same card later on (though I am sure they will separate them too.)

agreed, worst-case scenario should have been to have each round on the same night.

the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix took 15 months to finish. Coker likes to drag this shit out for some reason.

All the fights in one night. That's the way to do it.

Every round should be in a single event. That's the only way to do it. I get he wants headline fights for his events, but who really wants to see Bader-Mo headline an event? Maybe it'll be good for paramount. Everyone falls asleep, leaves their TV on, and COPS after the show gets good ratings as a result.

Yeah the fact that they could barely manage to fit the first round matchups in the first half of the year doesn't give me faith that this will be over within the next year and a half

They don't exactly have the greatest roster of talent, they kind of need to fill seats and events with big names. I'm fine with the length of the format, I just wish it was all legit hws not 4hws and a bunch of lhws that are under 210 fight night. If they had put all hws regardless of name recognition I think that would have been better. the intrigue of an unknkwn fighting mir or Fedor would have sold IMO. They could have extended a stars worth or created a new one. mo, bader and chael have no business in this tourney.

I disagree, I want to see how a guy like Bader performs against a HW

I miss Bjorn era Bellator and the weekly tournament matches every Friday.

It was kind of goofy from the start. LHW in it are kind of odd since they have some matches at 205 they could be doing this year with those guys and really continue to build that division.

Then they leave out some of there key HW's and on the other hand couldn't even get Minakov to return. The HW's in this tournament chances are very high they would've fought each other any way this year. So I guess outside of seeing Chael or Bader fight a HW we aren't really seeing anything special from the tournament itself. Then with dragging it out all year it seems to take the aura of having a tournament away.

P.S.: I guess I or anyone shouldn't be surprised. Coker is great at relations with the media and fighters but managing a roster through out a year and planning event after event he is just awful. When he is in control its seems like every event is thrown together for just the sake of that event with little to no thought about future events and match ups. What he did for events after the PPV in 2017 with that roster is a perfect example of lack of planning on his part. Which I believe is the biggest reason ratings aren't that much better than Bjorn era on shoe string budget and very little name value roster. I think this will be major factor in the downfall of Coker and possibility the ending of Bellator. The international expansion is good but I think the switch/re-branding to Paramount Network is a bigger factor than Bellator MMA for the expansion.

stupid to have half the field of a HW tourney as lightheavys. tourney would have been more notable had bellator maybe replaced king mo and chael with minakov and bobby lashley. minakov would have added legitimacy to the tournament as a true top 10 HW and tourney could have been opportunity to build lashley as star if he is able to get a marquee win under his belt.

seems like bellator used the tournament to set up the matches they wanted like Fedor v Chael and Meathead v Bader. If Bellator really wanted these fights to happen why not just schedule them instead of just trying to facilitate such matches through a tournament format. No one cared to see chael and rampage fight each other. and why is bader and king mo a HW fight when they are both light heavyweights that could be facing each other for the LHW belt and not a chance at the HW belt.

A cool idea would do an Iron Chef-like tournament. You could have a fighter train and not be sure who he was going to face, then the night of the fight he faces several podiums that rise out of the mist, each with a legendary fighter standing on top, and he must choose one and fight them immediately.

Strikeforce was spread out like this too. The worst thing that can happen are injuries to fighters moving on in the bracket. Then again, DC was a replacement and won the whole thing.

You mean besides the fact that there are 3 LHWs, a MW, 1 decent-ish HW, and 3 washed-up geriatric HWs?

Im not mad at it. Fedor vs Mir and potentially Fedor vs Sonnen is high level entertainment.

They def did. Now I understand Mir couldnt fight till April so keep that in mind but its clear based on ratings of last year they were thinking this is our big thing for the year. instead of putting it on three events we want to spread it out and this way we have 7 main events throughout the year.

But it doesnt feel special, it doesnt feel like a tournament cause its so spread out. Just feels like reg fights. Had they waited and done an April show with all 4 first round fights it would have been more special.

And really its not even bringing int he ratings. Meathead/Nelson flopped and for as big a card as Sonnen/Rampage was it didnt perform nearly as well as you'd expect, that was a card that needed to average over a mill and it didnt come close.

Fedor/Mir should do well, atleast you think it should and if SOnnen/Fedor happens that has to do big numbers, right? But other than that the rest of the fights I dont think are gonna move the needle.
