The way you pick and choose how to summarize that video reminds me of how the media takes one sentence and twists it to fit what they want it to say. Most Sherdoggers won’t watch the video, and will end up believing your, in my opinion, quite biased representation of it.
Here are my cliffs:
Thompson:
-It’s possible to have a friendship with Dana, but understand Dana is a business man.
-some fighters get their “feelings hurt” because they don’t understand Dana makes this differentiation.
-when it comes to negotiations, fighters need to understand this is how Dana approaches it.
-says Coker is NOT similar to Dana, but the principles of business and friendship apply to how both approach negotiations
-fighters, in general, should get managers so they don’t have to deal with the separation of “business and friendship”
-if a fighter opts for more pay up front, don’t expect post fight bonuses. That is how the UFC deals with paying you more on the front end.
-the promoter is not your friend during negotiations
-business people don’t expect other business people to require them to put friendship on the line
-fighters should think of themselves as business people
-interpreted Lorenzo’s statement as “you should not push me to a point where we are putting friendship on the line”
-business people should be able to handle business and also remain friends if they have a friendship in place
Big John:
-highlights the concept of adversarial relationships
-John clarifies what was “scary” about what Lorenzo said was not necessarily what he said, but how Lorenzo said it and the conviction he had when he said it.
-TS didn’t write Lorenzo’s full quote which was: “Friendship is friendship and business is business, but friendship never beats business.”
-John clarifies that he’s not a businessman and values friendship more.. so it is implied that he did not see eye to with Lorenzo’s statement. He also attributes this mindset to Lorenzo’s extreme success in turning the UFC from a dying organization to a multi billion dollar company.
-texting each other doesn’t make you “friends”
My opinion is TS did a shit job summarizing an overall interesting video from a fighter’s perspective.
