I have no grappling experience. Judo and BJJ appeals to me. Is it a good idea to take BJJ and Judo at the same time at the beginning or take one?

Take one, unless you're extremely physically gifted and won't get tired/sore/etc. Otherwise there's a danger of burning yourself out.

yea sure. Unless you are a very active person, two classes a day will wear you out. But you if you keep at it you will eventually get used to it.

just remember to know how to switch between "judo mode" and "BJJ mode." since they're are some things that are not compaitble. But they will compliment eachother very well.

You can take both at the same time. I started with no-gi grappling, began gi BJJ 5 months later, and started learning judo 1 month after that. I feel that I got a good handle of both especially after I started my log. If you can take one, I just trying out both for 1 class then deciding. If you can't do that, try BJJ first. It is easier to pick up and easier on your body.

Outside of the burnout factors already listed, there's alot of similarity between the two, so you might be doing yourself a disservice by taking both at the same time as they might be kind of redundant. You might be better off mixing a striking based art with a grappling art instead of 2 grappling based arts.

Also you might consider simply dedicating all your time to one instead of both. In the beginning there really isn't a substitute for experience, the more you go, the more you'll retain. Plain and simple. Then as you start to become comfortable perhaps look at branching out and studying both.

I disagree. judo and BJJ are really different. Plus he never said anything about being in MMA or striking. Taking both BJJ and judo is gonna make him a better overall grappler.

Best to start out with one art and stick with it for at least a year before doing any serious cross training.

If you think you can do it, go for it! You can always drop one if you find yourself gravitating more towards one sport than the other. Judo has a steeper learning curve initially (imo), so it might be rough doing both at the same time at first, but assuming you are young, you will get adjusted to it.

Yeah, judo def is harder to get used to in my experience.

After 3 months of BJJ I was able completely tool my friends while play groundfighting. After about 5 or 6 months of judo I'm not able to do the same when play wrestling. Maybe its just me though.

to you guys who have had experience, which is an easier transition? judo to bjj or bjj to judo?

What are your goals? I think for MMA purposes it's smart to learn both but a primary focus on Bjj would probably be smarter.

Take one or the other as much as possible.

I would only suggest you do them both if they offer limited training hours, and you have the extra time/money. They definitely compliment each other well

There's a guy in my BJJ gym who is a very good judoka. Very good.

He's been taking BJJ for about 3 months and his top game is easily blue belt level. He's also very good at attacking from backmount. I can usually defend chokes very well against blues but this guy gets RNCs and even triangles on me from behind. He's impossible to sweep as well because of his base.

His guard is not as good though. He's never finished me when I'm on top.

The point is, a very skilled judoka can kick my ass at BJJ when I've been doing it longer than him.

isn't this a good reason to try judo first?, the older you get anything gets harder to get good in but as far as judo vs bjj judo must be harder because it is more damaging to the body

thanks guys, I was planning on taking Muay Thai, BJJ and Judo all at once. Than progress to MMA classes. I was going to take each class 6 days a week and filling the days there aren't classes with privates. I work for myself so I have the time and money. Might just take Judo and Muay Thai at beginning. I don't want to burn myself out

I live near Fairtex and AKA gym. My plan was to take Muay Thai, BJJ and Judo for 3 - 4 months. Than go to Fairtex Bangplee or Por Pramuk and train (hopefuly fight) for 6 months. Come back work my way back into judo and bjj than take MMA classes. If everything goes well I wanted to live in Tokyo and fight in Shooto. I was introduced to MMA by Hayato Sakurai hls on youtube. One of the reasons judo and Shooto appeal to me so much.

So you're planning on working full time (self employed) and training (assuming each class is minimum 1hour, more likely 2 hours long) anywhere between 18-36 hours a week. Do you have a family? Girfriend? Plan on doing any Weight/Cardio training?

Again just my 2 cents, if you're goal is MMA then I'd pick one or the other, do some Muay Thai and find a nearby college with a good wrestling program that doesn't mind you coming in and training with them.

Are you planning on doing all of your training at one school/facillity? Do you already have a school in mind? Are you more interested in MMA or sport grappling? From your posts I'm assuming MMA.
