Been a negligent a-hole to my best friend and now its too late.

Well, at least you got to enjoy some time with him.
When I was a kid, I had a black lab puppy for a few months. One morning while I was sleeping he needed to go outside, and instead of taking him for a walk, my mom just opened the door and let him out by himself. I never saw him again. It still makes me sad to think about it, especially when I see dogs that remind me of him and I wonder what he'd look like today.

Sorry to hear. My dog passed away a couple years ago, and she could not go on long walks either due to her arthritis. In her last year or two, I would just drive her up to the local mountain and we would just take short walks and hang around. She enjoyed the nature and the view (I think). Maybe you could just take your dog to the beach and just chill there for a bit. Let him enjoy the surroundings.
