Opinion Beau of the Fifth Column: YouTuber, Social Commentator, a Voice for Good

There's the wit.

And who exactly said that....or anything remotely resemlbing that?

@Fawlty said he is "very empathetic and a strong thinker for a layman." He is. He's clearly more empathetic and a stronger thinker than the average person, as the average person, if you have literally any experience with the median American's political takes, is pretty selfish and intellectually lazy.

It takes enormous hysteria to convert that to "he's actually smart for a rural hick." And I don't see any other posts even mentioning that topic.
No idea if he's from a rural background. Even if that's where he comes from, today he isn't a hick in any discernible way, though.

He also doesn't seem to have expertise in topics beyond combat/military, survivalism, and perhaps journalism? So obviously a layman commentator when it comes to politics or pandemics. I doubt he'd like prefer the label of "amateur pundit" to layman, fwiw.

I think you're the only having difficulty understanding that. Or are you? Maybe you're trying to nitpick. I'll let you decide if you're going to accomplish this feat of intuition all by yourself.

Giving you a chance to clarify to avoid unfavourable interpretation. If you don't care to, don't do it, but expect the unfavourable interpretation to stand. Right now you're just dripping arrogant condescension. I guess I can decide as you suggested, and you can decide if this is how you want to come off.

You have a bizarre, detached concern for the comment though. I don't think you connect to the comment you made. You just made it, like it was an impulse. Again, nobody else is having trouble with it, and I don't think you are, either. It's all very wretched of you.

This guy isn't obscure (240k subs, 36M views), but he's only just come to my attention with some of his Coronavirus commentary, so I checked out more of his videos.

I would describe him as a down to earth dude who is sort of in the left, libertarian, anarchist wheelhouse. Very empathetic and a strong thinker for a layman. I believe he's a serious military veteran and independent journalist.

I would recommend him to anyone, but particularly to people who see themselves as independent.

He is a lefty who hates anything Trump does. Also he is on the bandwagon of coronavirus fear

I have a concern for language that comes off as wildly condescending. You seem to be taking us down the primrose path to turn this into a commentary on me rather than just clarifying what the original question asked. I'd suggest saving some word count and just answering the original question but since we're playing the psychoanalyze the other poster game, maybe I'm to assume that this type of dawdling evasion and what passes for wit and cleverness is what you do around here?

Anyway, sure thing there Sigmund. Arrogant, condescending douche it is.

I really feel for decent and intelligent people who live in rural communities. There were rural counties in which Trump won more than 90% of the vote in 2016. Can you imagine how suffocating it would be to be surrounded by that level and density of ignorance?

lol what a condescending cunt. People in rural area actually work hard for a living and are smarter than idiots who believe in socialism.

Translation: he's not in my death cult so orange beard man bad

Yep, I actually liked some of his videos but he is a phoney. He is just another pussy liberal who hides behind the army

To be fair he did say he was going to remain an asshole. I appreciate that kind of honesty and self awareness. Beats the hell out of some of the double thinking hypocritical phonies we see around here.

Eh, you have a point there. I use acerbic, condescending language with some frequency. I am being a prick when I do it though, and I'm talking down to people, and that's clear. I am being an asshole - no evasive "but how could you interpret it that way!" and "what a wretched interpretation" dilly-dallying.

I just can't figure out the use of "laymen" to be anything but a dig on this guy he's pushing. Laymen usually refers to someone who is lacking a sort of specialized knowledge concerning a particular field. If I were a master woodworker, I'd look at the work done by a hobbyist and say "That's great work for a laymen!" Given the context he provides for the term is "Very empathetic and a strong thinker for a layman" it's just such a subtle "I sniff my own farts" way to give a compliment to someone that's simultaneously so degrading when the area of expertise specified is being a thinker.

Anyway, enough of a trip down the primrose path. I think you're another Albertan... Weather is nice enough for a walk with the wife - may as well enjoy it!

His video are all compulsory viewing. He has to water things down a bit sometimes so people can understand what he's saying because his knowledge is so indepth.

Honestly I think you're just being uncharitable in interpreting his post and given our exchange in the ATV thread I inclined to think that's not an accident. Seems clear to me that @Fawlty means that the guy is not speaking as an expert in any one field but as a layman cultural/political commentator he's insightful.

I live in a somewhat rural area and there are a lot of Trump supporters in my area and tbh its not really that bad. I've said before I prefer conservatives as neighbors and liberals in office.

Yeah he is a good dude. His name isn't actually Beau though. He's a left anarchist or synydicalist. Has the appearance of a Trump supporting right.wing redneck. The only thing they have in common is that he's very pro gun.

He's a lefty wearing a redneck costume, and he thinks that people are too dumb to see through his manipulative act.
a crisis actor? those fuckers are everywhere, theres a cunt impersonating a president as we speak....

As he makes clear in the video he's not sold on the idea that germs cause disease nor that soap can kill germs.
Great excuse to stink, i'll have to remember that one when the mrs is complaning.

Eh I mean he’s just a layman let’s not give him too much credit. It’s not like he’s a super smart Harvard grad- someone like that is who we want to kneel down and worship

Well, there's not much I can do about this impression. It's incorrect in this instance, but my saying that won't fix anything, will it? My reasoning is there for everyone to see and the whole thing could have been easily avoided by "Well no, what I meant was..." but that didn't happen. If it's a case of suspect ethos, well, that's that. Uncharitable? Earlier in the thread I might have said you were right, but the series of responses has made me think this guy either likes to play some games (which I can appreciate) or he's just so dripping with condescension he can't even tell at this point.

Also, I do want to be clear - at least two other people in this thread (Ultra and xcv) are commenting on precisely what he says everyone else gets and you say I'm being uncharitable about. It's a smarmy comment and, rather than saying what Trotsky did the other day in another thread, he didn't just say "Imprecise wording" - at which point I gave Trotsky a full pass.

Anyway, your posting makes you seem like a straight shooter. Keep it up. Good quality for a mod to keep the rabblerousers in line.
