No idea if he's from a rural background. Even if that's where he comes from, today he isn't a hick in any discernible way, though.There's the wit.

@Fawlty said he is "very empathetic and a strong thinker for a layman." He is. He's clearly more empathetic and a stronger thinker than the average person, as the average person, if you have literally any experience with the median American's political takes, is pretty selfish and intellectually lazy.
It takes enormous hysteria to convert that to "he's actually smart for a rural hick." And I don't see any other posts even mentioning that topic.
He also doesn't seem to have expertise in topics beyond combat/military, survivalism, and perhaps journalism? So obviously a layman commentator when it comes to politics or pandemics. I doubt he'd like prefer the label of "amateur pundit" to layman, fwiw.
