It's been a while since I've had a training partner use Eddie's lockdown and electric chair sweep against me. Just wanted a refresher since Eddie used it so effectively against Royler.

Is it as simple as getting double under hooks, walking the trapped leg up to your opponent's butt and then working either a low knee slice or going to quarter mount and working a pass from quarter mount?

I know the two no no's are giving up the far side under hook and letting opponent get underneath you to hook near side leg with his arm.

Can anyone add or fix anything I've posted? Or a totally other way to beat this game?

Yeah, double underhooks kill it, but the bottom guy still has plenty of options to work from.

I don't see lockdown as a huge problem. If you have underhooks you are safe. If your opponent has underhooks you would be screwed with or without the lockdown.

One thing I do is pivot my free foot on to the locked down ankle and use that to block the lockdown. Than the trapped foot is free to escape.

Depending on how good the lockdowner is it can take 10 seconds or a split second. When a guy is obsessed with the lockdown a lot of time is dedicated to what's basically calf pummeling and than hitting the pass (knee slide variation) as soon as you get the timing.

As long as you actually address the lockdown (which Royler didn't do) lockdown is a very solvable problem. The fact remains the top person is till in top and the bottom person has his back flat on the mat.

Isn't there a way to bear your weight back and attack the lockdown without even using your hands? I feel like someone did this to me once but I wasn't clear what happened.

If you're staying flat on your back in bottom half you're doing wrong. Regardless if you are using lock down or the traditional half guard.

A guy from my gym showed us one for the lockdown where you wrap both your arms around their hips, so your arms are just under their ass. From there you just sprawl hard. Works for me so far.

what like a wrestling sprawl with a double leg type grip?...I've definitely seen that done...they kind of just get a deep grip behind your knee then explode out of the lockdown, hurts like hell if you hold on

Yeah I think that might be the same thing as what I mentioned above, too.

I like Shawn Williams' method of using a lockdown from the top to break his legs apart, then pass to mount from the near side underhook.

o yeah sorry didn't see that... in that case, yeah what you put

you have the option to be a dick about it and explode sprawl... or you can be a bit nice and slowly build up pressure with a more technical sprawl/back up

As soon as my training partners learned that they could sweep counter just by flipping over as I started the sprawl (my arms are hugging the legs so I have no underhook and no post and they have both arms/elbows free to peak out strongly) I had to switch tactics.

Better hope your partners never figure that out.

let go and base... its not a Chinese finger trap when hug behind the opponents legs

You could, but to do the pass on someone of equal size/strength typically an angle has to be taken before the sprawl and kick out. That angle traps your own arm.

Of course you could just stay flat and sprawl out but if it works on a guy who really wants to keep the lockdown either the top person has a huge upper body or the person on bottom has girly legs.

People have told me that they can get the lockdown while they're on their side.

I've yet to actually see/feel it.

Just triangle your legs as your passing on your knees

Interesting, this is a preventative technique to stay out of lockdown right? So the leg that my opponent would be trying to trap is the one I bring across to the outside and put behind the free leg?

Haven't seen this yet either, I have to look it up or ask my instructor to show it (unless you have a video :) )

Thanks.

you totally can be on your side, you can go oldschool sweep from the lockdown, of that you need to be on your side.

now, I kind of think using the lockdown too much makes you kind of lazzy, as soon as the guy passes, most lockdowners are fine by just staying flat for a while, thats probably because of the confidence that you can get to your side by getting an underhook and the whipe up (spell)... but from there you need to be on your side to either go oldschool, to go to the electric chair, or even to the dog fight (sorry for the planeters terms, but thats the best way I can explain the positions)

I use the bear hug and sprawl with pretty good success to break a half guard. A good guy, like you said, can time the post and flip over though. It actually happened to me in a tournament at a Grapplers Quest a few years ago.

There is also the problem of after I sprawl, I'm still a long ways to passing, if I'm going against a good guy. A good guy will either shrimp really hard and pull his legs out or just keep fending me away by pushing my head in different directions.

Against less experienced opponents, a pass from the sprawl works great though. I usually wrap their legs up with my own (like mma guys do in the UFC against the cage), inch forward and use the BJ Penn smash pass. But of course, I prefer to practice and learn techniques that work against guys my own experience level or higher.

Thanks for the feedback.

hmmm interestng, I didnt realize there was a sweep rith there, I was dealing with one dude who was trying to open my lockdown by doing that, so I had to work his head out of my belly to get the pressure off...
