Obviously a big thing people have been saying for a while, and even more so with this past weekend is "You have to beat the champ to be the champ". Would you agree with that sentiment?

Personally on the flip I would also say show people you ARE the champ, and get the contender out of there by a finish. But I'm curious on everyone's thoughts.

The same rules apply. No extra bs. None of that "a real champ defends" bs either

then gsp is the real champ, he never lost his belt

ali said that when he went to jail so he got stripped, not when he lost a close decision

I've always kind of looked at it that way, and I think a lot of judges do too. I feel like most close decisions go the way of the champion.

All fights should be judged the same. That kind of warped mentality encourages Champions to try to not get beaten up too badly, rather than actually making their case for victory, by defeating their challenger.

I hate that thinking but you are right. Shogun-Machida 1 wasn't even that close and the wrong guy still won.

Yeah I'm not sure it actually makes sense, but it seems to happen that way more often than not. So I've just put it in my head that if the fight is close, then the champ probably won.

Shogun/Machida 1
Cruz/Dillashaw
Benson/Edgar 2
GSP/Hendricks
Jones/Gus

Plenty of others. Some are closer than others, but the champ gets the nod in most cases.

then the guy in your avatar is a fraud, he never beat gsp

Why would he be a fraud? GSP left the sport.....

damt, whats wrong with people in this forum

Woodley clearly won the title that GSP vacated so he is the champion. Wonderboy didn't do enought to take it from him. I thought that Wonderboy took the last fight 48-47 but it wasn't all that decisive so I can see Woodley keeping the title. Woodley needs to shut up and fight the rightful contenders and prove he is as good as he thinks. Dana was right in saying "Stop asking for money fights when you aren't a money fight".

Obviously what TS said is true but beating the champ is not enough.

What's the point in winning a title and be the champ when you refuse to defend the belt out of fear of losing it to someone stronger and smarter?? Winning it it's not enough, you have to defend it to be considered a real champ not just a paper champ.

that what the quote mean <<you have to beat the champ to become the champ>> when ali went to jail, he lost his belt and a new champ got crowned, but without having to beat ali ( the champ at the time)

but people misuse this saying, they use it to justify bad decisions

I think the quote is utter nonsense. For all the people here who hate pro wrestling, they seem to adopt alot of its terminology when it suits them.
