According to the fine folks at the USDA and MyPyramid.com (the new Food Serving Guide) beans can count as both a protein or a vegetable serving, but cannot count as both in the same meal.

That said, I am trying to follow the 7 Habits. Beans are a good source of fiber and a calorie dense food. I would like to implement more into my diet.

Should I only eat them post-workout or are they permissable as a veggie, meaning eat them anytime (within acceptable limits of course)

Thanks.

Beans are acceptable anytime. Count them as a veggie.

Yeah, follow Clint's advice. You're better off using your "protein" classification for the real deal with complete proteins, like meats.

I guess my biggest concern with the beans is the carb content. I'm trying to lose a sizeable portion of weight, but I don't have a certain timetable in which to do so. I would like to drop another 15 by May, but that is doable.

I love beans -- I'm thankful for your responses as they cleared up my fears.

The thing with the carbs in beans is that alot of it is fiber. They are pretty low GI. Just make sure to get plenty of conciferous veggies in there too (Spinach, broccoli, etc)
