Bas Rutten

Bas has had good striking but that was about it. If people go back and watch his pancrase fights they would see that, even for the time, he wouldn't have won much in Pride or the UFC. He spent a large percentage of time on the bottom of mount or in other really bad positions. There weren't any strikes so him not being able to escape didn't matter as much. He also only survived some fights because you could grab the ropes when being in a submission to escape. Some fights he rope escaped multiple times in one fight.
I think you're looking at this a bit incorrectly. You're penalizing him for fighting within the rules of the organization. Pancrase had some wacky rules, but Bas fought within them incredibly well. Using the rope to escape was a legal and very effective tactic in Pancrase, so why wouldn't Bas use it? It's like saying a UFC fighter who uses the cage tactically is actually a crap fighter cause the cage doesn't exist in other organizations. You fight under the rules of the org and formulate your tactics accordingly. It's a shame we didn't get to see Bas make a long run in the UFC, as at this point it's difficult to really judge how he theoretically would have done there against the best competition.

He was a talented striker with very limited grappling skills. But he has a ton of charisma and was always entertaining to watch. One of the pioneers of this sport.
that pretty much sums it up. he also has a classic 'was bulled as a kid so got into martial arts' backstory. great at the liver shot!

Bas is a legend,
and blaming the rules of Pancrase
or losing the Ken ...
it's a different time period completely.

If Bas was a young gun coming up now...
he would still make it to the top level.

Guys like Ken, Bas, Gracie, and many others would be the same animals if they were kids coming up today.
We would still know their names.

Only difference now, is the ability to watch endless tape, have twenty perspectives of podcasts and analysis, and the ability to seek new gyms/coaches across the world if you're stuck in a rut locally.

The obsession in the 80/90s was kickboxing and heading to the Netherlands or Thailand, and the ultimate height was Asia in general. K1, Pride, Pancrase, ValeTudo, and more... eventually... UFC picked up more steam than the rest over the next decade (2000s)

Long story short,
Fedor would still be Fedor,
Gracie would still be Gracie.

Bas IS a legend ...
before there were children holding belts.
(like Jones and Izzy, or the mental child Daniel).

whos the dime piece in your avatar?

Dude was a badass and fighting at a weight class higher than his own.

If you wanna know how the UG feels than why don't you go ask them?

Bas fought from a square stance and didn't use a jab.

Fuqqin animal!

And yes...he outstruck Randleman from the bottom.

Im probably of the minority that believe hes overrated. Never fought his best contemporaries aside from the Shamrock bros and Randleman. If we had seen him vs Ruas, Frye, Rickson, Igor , Saku, Taktarov, Coleman, Svern etc etc id be able to see this legendary status placed upon him. To me, hes a Pioneer with a shitload of charisma, great striking and fundamental grappling.

Bas Rutten is the King of Queens and mma.
