Hey guys I already have a pair of 16 ounce gloves for sparring and was told to get bag gloves. Should I get 8 ounce gloves to do bag work, and would that be good enough? What would you suggest I get for it?

It depends on what type of bag gloves you are referring to. The traditional or old school type of bag gloves generally weigh about 8 ounces, but are not sold by weight. They are generally sold by size, ie. S,M,L,XL. They are the type of bag gloves sold by Twins, Top King, Boon, etc...

Super bag gloves, which are bag gloves that resemble western style boxing gloves, but designed to be used for bag work, and generally with H&L wrap around wrist closures, are almost exclusively available in 12 or 14oz. versions. The 12oz. is a good size for people of average size and weight. Larger individuals or those who wish to get a little more of a work out seem to go with the 14's.

As far as the super bag type gloves, Ringside, Title, Fairtex, Rival and most reputable manufacturer's all have a nice selection to choose from. Just be sure to look for a "bag glove" for bag work, as sparring gloves, unless they are listed as an all-purpose training glove, are not well suitted to pure bag work. And, even then bag specific gloves are probably a much better choice than an all-purpose training glove for bag work. I hope this helps.

Thanks ECS. The reason why I ask about the 8 ounce gloves is because they have a sale on twins gloves in the 8 ounce size. (I'm also aware of the Rival bag gloves which look pretty good. Have you had any experiences with them?) I'm 5'9 and weigh in at 174 if that helps. Would you the 8 ounce or the 10 ounce gloves adequate for just bag work? I could go for just the gloves with out the hook and loop strap, but I want that for more protection.

I weigh around 215lbs. and even 12oz. gloves can be a bit hard on my hands when I work the heavy bag. I'm not sure going below that in a super bag glove or boxing glove design would be a good idea unless you hit like a girl, have perfect technique or extremely durable hands/wrists.

I've been using 8 oz traditional bag gloves daily since i started training again. No problems. I'm ~ 170 lbs. Nearly everyone at my gym uses them too. I've only used Ringside and Title. Just fine.

My instructor told me just to pick up bag gloves, the ones with the elastic band as opposed to the hook and loop enclosure. Personally I want to pick up these twins gloves on sale on the bushido website that are 8 ounce gloves. Just wondering if that is good enough for bag work considering my size and that it is strictly for bag work. I already have 16 ounce gloves for sparring.

Check the post that I just left in G&E for the Fairtex Super Bag Gloves on Sale. The Twins (if you are referring to BGVL3's) are an all-purpose training glove that will not last as long as a "bag specific glove."

I wouldn't get elastic band... hook and loop will give better wrist support. Also, unless you find a good deal, I recommend King/Top King over Twins any day of the week (if you are getting a Thai brand).

Thanks Nameless. I was actually looking at this one. But for a dollar more instead of the open thumb, and getting the RB4 glove with the thumb enclosure. Have you tried either one?

I would not bother with the RB4 as they are not made of leather. I havn't tried either, but I've heard good thing about the RB3. I considered them, but I'm in the USA and they run 45 USD here from Title plus shipping... and there's no way I'm going to pay $45 for 8oz bag gloves. Personal opinon! ;)

I agree with you. I saw some windy bag gloves with the elastic around the wrist but they were selling them for $70 Canadian. But definitely going for the hook and loop one.

I did not notice that untill you told me and I double checked the website. On the rival site the RB3 with the open thumb is selling for $39 CDN right now and seriously thingking about it. However I checked out bushido.ca and they have a special on the 8 ounce twins gloves (albeit the fancy ones). Anyone have experiences with those fancy ones?

Im pretty much the same size as you. I have the Top King bag gloves in Large and i dont have big hands. WIth the wraps on, the glove is pretty snug.

I love my Rival RB2s. I have some of the older, smaller kinds of bag gloves, and i find the bigger ones are much more comfortable to use, and really protect your wrists.

Have you ever tried the RB3's with the open thumb?
