Should new students be allowed to spar with 4 oz gloves and no headgear? And by new I mean 3 classes in, no prior experience. This took place last night at my gym and it has me seriously questioning the coaches judgment. Should I?

    I don't think it's a good idea at all.

4 oz? Are those MMA gloves you are using? Sparring by 3 classes sounds kinda sketchy unless you have a previous background. Took me a couple months before I could spar at my gym. What type of martial arts is it?

Im talking about Dicks Sporting goods mma gloves. And it's an MMA gym. The owner fired our striking coach and now is trying to do it himself

4 oz gloves are 4 oz gloves. Doesn't matter if they're Dicks Sporting Goods or not. Either way, no, someone should put an end to that. Unless he has experience as Ijung said.

    Define sparring.

If by sparring you mean that you're working on footwork, angles, etc... just tapping the other guy to show him he's leaving an opening, working for takedowns and practicing your positional awareness... by all means.

If you're talking about actual sparring, more than 20-40% contact, fuck no.

No, it wasn't techinique sparring, but 90% power sparring. It was definately fuct up to have these new guys taking part in that. They really weren't ready and it showed. It's definately time to go.

Look for another gym. This is unacceptable!

The first bad move was to fire the striking coach and "try" to do it himself.

yeah you need to get the hell out of there. hopefully these guys don't have the skill to hit hard enough to really do damage, but ya never know.

Maybe you should even post the name of the gym, the area and the name of the instructor so others in your area can steer clear of this irresponsible place.
