Martin Lawrence Confirms BAD BOYS 3 Script in Development

Bad-Boys-2-Dragonlord.jpg

Shit just got real. Last night, during an appearance on Conan, Martin Lawrence confirmed that a new installment of Bad Boys is in the works. "I believe [it's happening], yes," Martin told O'Brien. "I just talked to Jerry [Bruckheimer] yesterday, and he said it's real, [that] they're working on a script... it all looks good." He also implied that Smith was back on board, as well. Lawrence even has a role for Conan in mind: "A crooked cop on crack," he told the host.

It's been clear for a while now that Lawrence was eager for more Bad behavior: Last month, he wrote a post on Facebook to mark the anniversary of the release of 2003's Bad Boys II, noting: "11 years ago today, Bad Boys II was released in theaters. Feelin' it's about time for number 3' what do you think Will Smith?"

Still, getting a sequel off the ground has proved tough. Smith and Bay both discussed the idea publicly back as 2008, during an appearance before the MTV Movie Awards, but noted that the films' stars (and their director) were so well-paid that another installment would be too expensive; since then, such screenwriters as Peter Craig (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1) and David Guggenheim (Safe House) have been attached.

THE GREY's Joe Carnahan in Talks to Direct BAD BOYS 3

Joe-Carnahan-Bad-Boys-3-060915-Dragonlord.jpg

Bad Boys 3 is still alive. About a year ago, it was reported that Martin Lawrence was still interested in pursuing a third installment of the franchise, and David Guggenheim was working on a script. According to Deadline, that draft is now apparently being looked over by Joe Carnahan, who is in possible talks to write and/or direct the possible film.

Surely part of the film’s viability revolves around whether or not Will Smith will be able to return. Word is that the studio is looking to have everything in place for Bad Boys 3 soon enough that Smith might be able to slot it in after Suicide Squad.

As for Carnahan, he would be taking the reins from the director of the first two films, Michael Bay. But Carnahan has cut his teeth both on well-received low-budget films such as The Grey, and big-budget action franchises like The A-Team, which might make him a good fit.

BAD BOYS 3 and 4 Get Feb. 2017 and July 2019 Release Dates

Bad-Boys-2-Dragonlord.jpg

Sony Pictures has set a slew of release dates for a number of promising upcoming projects, most notably two Bad Boys sequels. After years of no commitments from Michael Bay, it was learned last month that Narc and The Grey director Joe Carnahan was in talks to write and possibly direct Bad Boys 3.

It appears Carnahan may have cracked the story for two sequels at once, as Sony has dated Bad Boys 3 for February 17, 2017 and Bad Boys 4 for July 3, 2019. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are expected to return.

Other notable dates: The Dark Tower may finally be getting off the ground with director Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair) at the helm, as Sony has slated that picture for release on January 13, 2017. And Edgar Wright’s next movie, Baby Driver starring Ansel Elgort, gets a solid March 17, 2017 release date. Sony has also slated Resident Evil 6—the final installment of the franchise—for 2017, and Underworld 5 will drop in October 2016.

Will Smith Says BAD BOYS 3 Coming Within the Next 16 Months

Bad-Boys-2-Dragonlord.jpg

If Sony’s Bad Boys had debuted in the modern era of cinema rather than 1995, we likely would have had a multi-film franchise by now. Michael Bay directed the original relatively low-budget actioner starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, and then followed that film up with a bigger box office (and much bigger budget) for the 2003 sequel, Bad Boys 2. More than a decade later, the studio is looking to reboot the franchise and has already penciled in two release dates for the third and fourth installments.

In speaking with Zane Lowe in the Beats 1 studio, Smith more or less confirmed that Bad Boys 3 is on track for its scheduled February 17, 2017 release date: "There is a very, very, very strong possibility that you will be seeing a Bad Boys within the next 12-16 months."

As of this writing, that’s almost exactly 16 months, so if nothing else, Smith’s math skills are as sharp as ever. Unfortunately we don’t have much more in the way of details at this point. It’s still unclear whether Smith will star in and produce the next film(s) or if he will just stick to the role of a producer and hand the franchise off to new actors. Bad Boys 4 is currently set for July 3, 2019 release.

Joe Carnahan Seemingly Confirms He's Directing BAD BOYS 3

Joe-Carnahan-The-Grey-Set-031115-Dragonlord.jpg

It was previously reported that Joe Carnahan (The Grey, The A-Team) was in talks to write a new draft and possibly the direct the third installment of the action film franchise starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. Today, Carnahan shared a pre-vis image from pre-production on the film, teasing his likely seat in the director’s chair.

This image suggests that at least one gun-toting, motorcycle-riding character will be featured in Bad Boys 3, but more importantly, it strongly suggests that Carnahan is the man in the driver’s seat. It also means that all the buzz we’ve been hearing about Bad Boys 3 getting underway sooner than later might just be coming true.

Just yesterday, Will Smith himself talked about the reunion between him and Lawrence. “I saw Martin [Lawrence] a few weeks ago,” Smith reveals. “I haven’t seen him for about two years. We just looked at each other. We hugged. In that moment, we knew we were making another Bad Boys. We’re definitely doing another one.”

Will Smith Reportedly Agrees to Star in BAD BOYS 3

Will Smith and Jerry Bruckheimer have reportedly been in non-stop negotiations to get the actor to return to the Bad Boys franchise for the third installment.

Now, according to TMZ, the actor has agreed with the producer and it's an unsigned done deal right now. The report claims that Smith and Bruckheimer discussed a contract and the new script over a four hour dinner and followed it up with lunch the next day, parting ways in agreement.

Bad Boys III and IV have already been confirmed, with release dates of February 17, 2017 and July 3, 2019, respectively.

Will Smith said he and Martin Lawrence would "definitely" be doing the sequels so these meetings are likely just going over the fine print.

BAD BOYS 3 Now Titled BAD BOYS FOR LIFE; New Release Date Revealed

Sony has titled Bad Boys 3 as Bad Boys For Life, EW confirmed. The name change comes with the project moving closer to reality with a Jan. 12, 2018 release in mind, a source tells EW.

The new title is a fitting throwback to 2003’s Bad Boys II where star Will Smith tells his cop partner Martin Lawrence, “We ride together, we die together. Bad boys for life.” (See the clip, below.) The two will reprise the roles they debuted in 1995’s Bad Boys — Michael Bay directed that movie and the sequel. The Grey‘s Joe Carnahan is in the director’s chair for Bad Boys For Life, not Bay.

Bad Boys For Life has had three different release dates in the last year, originally set for Feruary 17, 2017 before shifting to June 2, 2017. Now, it’s back to a winter window.

There’s a tangential Bad Boys connection to the new name. Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs’s record label is Bad Boy Records, a part of Sony Music. One of his singles (and all-time great music videos) is called “Bad Boys For Life.” Combs appeared on “Shake Ya Tailfeather” with Nelly and Murphy Lee; the Billboard No. 1 hit appeared on the Bad Boys II soundtrack.

Despite the finality of the title, Bad Boys For Life has no bearing on Bad Boys 4, a source tells EW. Bad Boys 4 is currently dated for July 3, 2019.

BAD BOYS 3 Now Titled BAD BOYS FOR LIFE; New Release Date Revealed

Bad-Boys-081116-Dragonlord.png

Bad Boys 3 is finally happening, and now we know the official title of the film and an updated release date.

Titled Bad Boys for Life, the movie - which will bring back both Martin Lawrence and Will Smith, with director Joe Carnahan (A-Team, The Grey) seemingly taking the helm instead of Michael Bay. Bad Boys for Lifewill be in theaters on January 12, 2018.

No story details yet confirmed, but rumors have pointed to a scenario where real-time progression (13 years since Bad Boys II) sees Detective Mike Lowrey (Smith) now married with kids, much like his partner Marcus Burnett (Lawrence). Having Lowrey stumbling through parenthood while Marcus is cruising into retirement, kids all raised, is a premise for a lot of classic Bad Boys-style comedy.

Joe Carnahan Says BAD BOYS FOR LIFE Will Be the Best of the Trilogy

NwTMvIb.jpg

Speaking with io9, director Joe Carnahan revealed that Bad Boys For Life had been pushed back to accommodate Will Smith’s hectic schedule following Suicide Squad.

“We couldn’t all get in a room, go through this thing and really ring it out,” Carnahan said. “I’m a big believer in ‘Do the work at the script level until you’ve got something you know works.’ That everyone is happy with, the stars are happy with, the director is happy with, the studio is happy with.”

The director then went on to say that, “There’s only one Will Smith and one Martin Lawrence. You can’t replace those guys and I wouldn’t want to be involved if it wasn’t Will and Martin. They are that franchise.”

Unsurprisingly, Carnahan kept mum on any details about his upcoming film’s storyline. Rumors have been circulating that Bad Boys For Life would follow the franchise’s last film in real-time, taking place nearly 13 years later. The story may focus on Detective Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett adjusting to a slower suburban life tied down by families and retirement.

While many fans are excited to see Bad Boys return, there are those fans who’d rather the franchise rest peacefully. However, Carnahan says he’s confident that Bad Boys For Life has “the strongest script of any of those movies. Hands down. In a walk over.”

He went on to explain that, “Unless you’re Toy Story 3, usually third ones aren’t the strongest, and I think this one will be the strongest of the trilogy thus far.”

Carnahan later assured fans that he and the whole Bad Boys family took the franchise’s legacy very seriously. “When you’re coming back after 15 years, you better come back with a home run ball, And I really believe that’s what we have....We’ve got a responsibility to make something that’s absolutely equivalent or exceeds what comes before. That’s a really important thing for all of us.”
