Hey guys, there is a thread currently going on in the heavyweights with this exact topic.

I thought I'd start one here to get more informed opinion on the matter.

I completely disagree and think Penn would take this comfortably, but maybe I'm wrong. Has Aoki gotten that much better, or has Penn declined to the point where Aoki would be favoured?

Penn has better credentials, but the guy with better credentials doesnt always win. That being said, I would still say Penn wins it. Has aoki ever competed in worlds?

The highest credentials I know off hand about Aoki are his ADCC Japan bouts

Straight grappling? Tough to say. Penn hasn't competed in BJJ since 2000.

Yes straight grappling.

The other factor would be whether or not Aoki has improved to the level of skill B.J. had at that time. I'm assuming at the very least that while B.J. might have not gotten significantly better since then, he certainly didn't drop off.

I'd go with BJ Penn pretty easily in MMA or straight grappling, but what do I know?...

Honestly, I know very little about BJ Penn's straight grappling. I've seen a lot of Aoki's matches and he's good, but he doesn't seem near as dominating on the ground as he is in MMA matches.

I don't see Aoki catching BJ, which would be his only shot. So BJ.

I have to go with BJ on this one. It's my understanding that not only was the first non-brazilian to win gold as a black belt at the Mundials, but no one even scored a point on him. I may be misinformed, though.

Then again I would have never bet for Eddie Bravo in his match with Royler...

BJ won in 2000, as a full time athlete, at the time there were few full time athletes doing BJJ.

I mean its still an accomplishments, but its not the same as winning the mundials today.

Also ADCC 2005 run wasnt that bad, he lost to Marcelo in his weight class and then to Roger on the absolute, good fucking deal, BJ would be grapplefucked against the same opponents.

I have Shinya on grappling with a gi and BJ Penn on MMA, grappling nogi, i think BJ takes it via top crushing game.

Shinya Aoki would take BJ Penn to the woodshed in both an MMA Bout and in a grappling match.

No way is Aoki the favourite. BJ is a former BJJ world champion, has WAY better wrestling & is lightyears ahead in striking. There is only one way that Aoki could possibly win (submission) and the chance of that happening is very very slim..

Grappling match: Penn wins by take down & a very impressive top game. Aoki is very flashy & actually a very good grappler, however BJ is a lot better fundamentally & is a former world champ. There is no way Aoki could be favoured.

I would have BJ as the favorite, but I don't think it's as impossible for Aoki to win as some would think. It would also come down to who wants it more. And BJ nowadays is not as hungry as the BJ "of old".

But yeah, I'd still bet on BJ

Another vote for penn here. Both grappling and mma. I wonder if aoki would pass penn's guard... I would guess no.

Penn on points, if someone is subing someone, is aoki, but I really dont think he can sub Bj...

There's no point speculating about a nearly impossible scenario, but it would probably be a fun match. Theoretical matchup discussions usually cause a shitstorm or turn into a pissing contest between 13-yo-fangirl-tier posters

You are underestimating Aoki's grappling skills. Also, one can not even be certain that Penn would score a takedown so talking about cruising to victory via "impressive top game" has absolutely no sense

ok realistically, BJ ends up on top ANDstays there. Aoki will pull guard, noway he actually takes BJ down

in an mma match penn keeps it standing and knocks him out.

in a grappling match, i'd say bj stays on top and wins by points from a guardpass. i have a hard time picturing anyone catching bj in anything from their guard. aoki would throw all kinds of whacky shit at him, only to have it escaped. i see penn passing to halfguard, then side or mount and aoki escaping. then repeat, for the duration of the bout.
