Axe kick tutorial.

sweeeeeettttt. I gave up on this kick a long time ago but am still impressed with anyone who can use it skillfully.

Can't wait to get home to check out the vid.

Good job Ninja, I'll add this to the Instructional threads when I'm feeling less lazy.

Is it a striaght up and down axe kick, in-to-out, or out-to-in?

Very nice tutorial as usual.

Awesome bag work too, very fluent and powerful.

ps. War Ukraine

Is that supposed to hit with the the bottom of the heel or the sid of the heel?

Even though I said it on youtube, I'll repeat here. Great job as always. Gave me some things to work on when I practice my axe kick. My shihan back home always has the class do front stretches, but never specifically worked on the axe kick, at least while I was there, which has caused me great joy when I've surprised people with it in sparrin'. One day, I just realized, "Wait a minute, I've seen this before," and started workin' on it. I think I've got it fairly decent.

If you watch the vid and read the tutorial, he does all 3.

Correct me if I'm wrong Kyryllo, but I believe it's with the ball of the foot or the bottom of the heel, dependin' on your target and intent.

Yup.

Thanks for the video, Kyryllo, I'll check it out as soon as I'm home.

Nice vid.

The out-to-in axe kick can actually work all-right in MT as well if you fake a low kick and your opponent brings his leg up to block and has his hands forward.

Kyryyryryrylllo, that was beautiful. You are an extraordinary asset to these boards.

My question is: How useful is the axe kick in an MMA setting? I am not from a TKD striking background (I train in muay thai and san shou), so I'm not familiar with the pros/cons tactically of this kick. So now that I've watched K's tutorial, I might be able to throw an ugly axe kick, but when/how should I use it? I've only ever seen Crocop use it in MMA (vs Hunt). Seems like a lot of effort for a little gain.

Didn't St. Pierre throw an axe kick at a grounded opponent a while back? The Trigg fight, maybe?

Thanks much Kyryllo.

He threw it to the gut while some dude was on the ground, I think. It's probably the easiest way to use the axe kick for the less flexible.

My mistake. The St. Pierre axe kick was against Jason Miller:

I don't think it's a knock against St. Pierre's flexibility that he threw the axe kick at an opponent on the ground; I was bringing it up as an example of an effective use of the kick in an MMA setting. An axe against a standing opponent seems to be asking for trouble; but it seems like a viable alternative to kicking someone in the leg or diving into their guard if they're on the ground.

What, no jumping spinning axe kicks, Sabumnim Kyryllo? Man you're slipping. :P

Love the axe kick! One of my faves to use when sparring, but never knew about pivoting when executing an axe kick. I'll definitely give that a try when I'm back to working out.

I always loved the ace kick: simple, yet surprisingly versatile and brutally effective. A good fighter can can totally blindside an opponent with it under the right conditions.

Based on how I was taught: all of the above, depending on certain factors such was whether you're squared off with your opponent in an open or closed stance and what you hope to accomplish with it.

@Kyryllo: as always, top-drawer work, dude.
