I am happy to know my belt and simply do not care about stripes. I don't need the gradual "official" pat on the back. I plan to train and compete at whatever belt the masters say I am. I am learning every time I train and ive noticed that when my belt comes off in sparring my ability does not fade.

That's fine and dandy, But....... If your school chooses to use them, then it is a bit disrespectful to not put them on.

Very true. I have not and will not dodge a stripe if one is to be issued. Nothing but respect to the teachers and masters.

Cool thread brah, *gives RespectIsEarned a pat on the back*.

In training I have noticed that every gym is different but the goal is to win, or learn in failure to do so in training. So the alpha and the omega to the sport is in training. Tap a million times in training to get one win in competition and you are on course.

edit: oh, thanks brah..

The problem is not everyone feels like that, some people need to get pats on the back to stay motivated and keep progressing. I personaly don't care either way, but i do get it why some people really want the stripes.

Haha, this reminds me of a guy I train with who keeps taking the stripes off his blue belt for some reason, I guess they come off in the wash and he doesn't bother to put them back on until the instructor makes him. The instructor told him to come to class on a certain day and hinted to him that he'd be getting promoted to purple belt, so he didn't show up that day on purpose. I find it hilarious how he actually puts effort into dodging promotions.

Like I said. I accept all promotions and train 4 days a week. I would never avoid a promotion.

edit: I will train regardless

one of my friends is a purple belt, he felt like he was being handed his brown too easy, needless to say he's still rocking the purple..... I think its because one of his best friends and soon too be roomate's is Rigan Machado (their sharing an apartment in Brazil). Hell, with Rigan, i dont even feel like i'm worthy of wearing a white belt.

but yea, I'm training under a guy who has NEVER awarded a black belt, and I dont think he will for a while, so its nice to get a stripe, cause its harder than balls to prove yourself.

If you don't care about stripes, why bother to avoid them? Do you avoid compliments from your coaches as well?

Anyway, get a camo Gi; When grappling, no one will see you roll.

My concern with stripes is that they seem to interfere with washing the belt o_0

Did you missed out on a stripe and decided to come on F12 and start a thread about how much you do NOT care about stripe?

haha, that's just like me:icon_chee

Especially in MT I never cam on promotion nights. They finally tricked me into taking a personal test on a sat morning. I was starting to embarrass them, as I was a white belt in MT, and I had black eyes from fighters training. And when I was paired up with super new guys, you could really tell I didn't belong there. Heck I qualified for the 2005 National WKA tournie=D

It's a fun game I guess. Seeing how long you can just kinda be a white belt before it become absurd. I plan on being a blue for another 4-5 years:redface:

if your instructor is looking to add stripes to people, and you can usually tell when they are. Hold back, and work on your defense from side control or something, that way you won't look good. Then when you are at about the next belt level, turn it up. I's kinda like saving 3 or 4 leveling bonuses and using them all at once.

I understand it's fairly common to feel like you don't deserve a promotion, but to actively avoid it when you know it's coming? That's plain madness.
