The U.S. government suspended all imports of Mexican avocados “until further notice” after a U.S. plant safety inspector in Mexico received a threatening message, Mexico’s Agriculture Department said in a statement.
“U.S. health authorities ... made the decision after one of their officials, who was carrying out inspections in Uruapan, Michoacan, received a threatening message on his official cellphone,” the department wrote.

The import ban came on the day that the Mexican avocado growers and packers association unveiled its Super Bowl ad for this year. Mexican exporters have taken out the pricey ads for almost a decade in a bid to associate guacamole as a Super Bowl tradition.
The association did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the ban, which hits an industry with almost $3 billion in annual exports. However, avocados for this year’s Super Bowl had already been exported in the weeks prior to the event.

Because the United States also grows avocados, U.S. inspectors work in Mexico to ensure exported avocados don’t carry diseases that could hurt U.S. crops.

I wouldn't be shocked if this is all planned.

There is a shortage of many things in the United States already and I expect more to come.

US avocado farmers will be making some bank. I thought capitalist would be in full support of this.

Anyone else feel like you've accomplished a great feat when you buy a bag of avocadoes and actually manage to eat them all before they go bad?

The only thing I think I've thrown out more than avocadoes in my life is baby spinach.

Rough timing right after they spent all that money on that super bowl commercial.

Take your ripe avocadoes and peel and chunk them and freeze them. Use the frozen avocadoes for smoothies, avocado toast or guacamole. You're welcome.

Cartels are heavily involved in avocados. It's a pretty visible example showing the legalization alone won't eliminate criminal enterprises like is suggested with drugs.
It's a pretty amazing example of how cartels are actually so weakened by eliminating drug policies that they have to chase income from much lower margin products to stay afloat.
Cartels formed with weed as a high margin ag product many decades ago when weed was criminalized in America and then became international powers by going for higher margin easy-smuggle products like cocaine. Them having to fuck around with $1 fruits vs $100 grams of powder should be celebrated as an achievement of their regression.

It will pretty severely fuck up their enterprises. Avacados are hardly the cash crop that drugs are.

Cartels are tolerated because they bring massive amounts of money into the country. If you remove the drug trade it becomes a substantially less alluring career which decreases numbers. It also results in the citizens turning on them.

Being forced to move to other ventures like avacados, hitting oil pipelines, kidnapping, extortion will kill them long term.

Bingo.
It goes from being insane narcoterrorist quasi governmental power cartels to regionalized smaller organized crime shit.
It's like going "booze being legalized didn't hurt the mafia because they still control waste management contracts!"

Cartels moved into crops like avocados, limes, and lemons long before the U.S. or Canada legalized weed. They took over tourist industries in Mexico well before then too. It's easy money. It's easy to clean money.

They've also integrated themselves into legal and illegal weed markets in the U.S.

I don't know how anyone can look at whats happening in California, Colorado, Oregon, etc. and think that legalization is stamping out Cartels' weed enterprises.

Cartels are literally smuggling weed back into Mexico now because of how cheap and high quality the legal weed market is in America. All because it's still illegal in MX
