Retired UFC fighter Anthony Johnson on Monday pleaded not guilty to a single count of misdemeanor domestic battery in Florida.

Johnson, 35, was arrested earlier this monthafter his ex-girlfriend told police he used a “football hold” to pick her up and move her into another room during an argument. Johnson admitted picking up the woman but denied he was trying to harm her. Police did not find any visible injuries on the woman.

Johnson’s attorney, Michael Walsh, called the domestic battery charge “completely ridiculous” and vowed to go to trial if the case proceeds.

“Anthony Johnson, if he hits you, your grandkids are going to feel it,” Walsh told MMA Junkie on Wednesday. “He’s trying to deescalate her verbal argument. So he simply picks her up gently and puts her down. He simply did not want to argue anymore and put her in another room. That happens every day in America in domestic relationships. … It might be a domestic dispute, but it’s not domestic violence.”

Walsh noted in Johnson’s initial court appearance that judge Debra Moses Stephens ordered a less severe no-contact order as opposed to one completely forbidding any contact.

“We’re taking Jerry Springer and turning it into the courtroom,” Walsh said.

50/50 odds he threw in an oil check during the football hold.

Hes using the Chris Rock joke as the defense instead of hitting her, you shake her hard

that is true... if Rumble wanted to hurt her, there would be physical evidence.... it sounds like it was an argument blown out of proportion

What does he mean by it happens all the time? Don't people just leave the room rather than picking their SO up and moving them?

Was the term "hits like a Ford Escort" used in court i wonder.

Good luck, I could see this going poorly for Rumble. They’re gonna try and crucify him.

Well most people can't pick someone up and move then to another room like a folding chair.

To be fair rumble usually quits when grappling starts. He probably got her in the football hold and realized he was gassing then simply gave the fight up.

They both agree on what happened, the question is if it is domestic violence. In its strictest definition I think it is - Restraining, and physically and forcibly moving a person against their will is not legal.

Rumble involved in drama with another crazy fat white chick?

He was coming back for the money anyway. MMA retirement announcements are a joke.

Is there anyone who really believes someone like Rumble is going to retirement for real at his age and miss the potential paydays in the UFC? I'm surprised he's been gone this long.

He was listed for legal purposes as indigent. Clearly his great lucrative opportunity outside MMA isn't going so well and likely the money he made betting against himself in the Cormier rematch is gone. Heh.

Lmfao. Jesus this lawyer must be a character.

In hindsight he probably shouldn't have even picked her up... but there are way worse ways to "de-escalate" a situation and I can understand the thought process that would lead to him moving her to another room. I hope the correct outcome is reached in this case. Either way, Rumble and the accuser should probably stay far away from each other.

Rumor has it that yoga moms grandkids felt her yoga matt being thrown across the room.
