What's the verdict on Stone Mountain as a neighborhood to live?

Just moved to the Atlanta area from NYC and we do not want to live inside the perimeter as we want space (ie: 1-2+ acres). We've driven through Stone Mountain a few times and it looks nice, but when I research it or ask someone we hear it's "stagnant" or not the best place to be. Really?

Any insight would be helpful on the following:

1. schools (as in grade schools for kids)
2. neighborhood (as in, no one is breaking into your crib in the middle of the night)
3. maybe commute time?

I train in Dunwoody (Alliance baby!) and living near lawrenceville right now and don't mind the commute at all.

Also, if you DON'T recommend Stone Mountain, what DO you recommend. We're not opposed to going north either (Cumming? Acworth? etc.)Lawrenceville seems nice, just more $$$ than Stone Mountain.

Thanks

A man was just shot and killed at a gas station an hr ago. Enjoy your stay.

Move to Savannah. But not east Savannah. Stay away from the place.

Just get in your car and head north.

Don't stop until the people say 'aboot' instead of 'about.'

For reference

smoke rise is a pretty nice area.. i guess that would be more like tucker/stone mountain.

Sandy Springs is a nice area. Alpharetta is extremely well to do. If you have the money to burn, they're both right there.

EDIT: Also, I've never heard anything bad about Stone Mountain. Pretty much any town in the Atlanta metro area you choose is going to be thriving.

Was hoping Stone Mountain was a secret military base with aliens.

Very disappointing thread.

those are all several hours away from Atlanta.

He was suggesting TS move to Richmond Hill. Its where all the classy people from Savannah went after it started getting pretty rough. Savannah is trash now. My friend just married a girl from Richmond hill.

Decatur is nice TS. I know a few people there and I'm trying to head that way asap.

Stone Mountain (the actual mountain and park) has bad ass laser shows. Good for families or just doing something different one night. They do Floyd sometimes.

Alpharetta or Murietta nowhere else in Atlanta is worth looking.

There are some rough areas around Stone Mountain but that is true for most of the areas right around the city. If ou drive for long enough you will end up in a shit hole if you are around the city. I really dont like that side of town to be honest. Alpharetta, Marietta, Dunwoody, Roswell, East Cobb, Vinings, Smyrna (the Vinings side), Cumming, Forsyth are all way better to me than that side of the city. I have a condo in Smyrna that I would love to sell lol but I just signed a tenant to a year lease last month. We live waay north of the city now in Clarkesville.

Grew up in east Cobb. Nice place to raise a family but pretty congested. That goes for most of the greater Atlanta area though.
