Looks like atheists are trying to gather more political clout...

Thousands of atheists turned out Saturday on a muggy Washington day to take part in "Reason Rally," dedicated to boosting the political power of the growing number of non-religious Americans.

"We are here, we are one, we are joined and we are celebrating our secular movement and we want more of this in our government," said rally attendee Doc Gregory, from Hagerstown, Maryland.

Look who showed up in support...

"Science Guy" Bill Nye, comedian Lewis Black and members of the hip-hop collective the Wu-Tang Clan were part of a high-profile lineup preaching to atheists at the Lincoln Memorial.

Where do you think atheism is headed in America and would we vote in an atheist president any time soon? Would teaching atheism in school be considered a violation of keeping church and state separate?

I miss the good old days when we went to war because God told our president to do so.

The average American is too dumb to imagine no imaginary person in the sky looking over them and deciding their fate after they die. So no.

My brother is there rubbing elbows with atheists and the like. He said it's a pretty great conference, he went last year too.

There's no reason or right to teach atheism in school as a requirement in the US, but instead teach science, critical thinking, etc. Atheism can't go anywhere but up from here, and that's a good thing. We're still about 40% fundamentalist Christian (and not "reasonable" Christian, but the crazies are 2 out of 5 people). A lot of those people are going to die off with the baby boomers and they will fade from politics a bit. I don't know if it will happen suddenly like a tipping scale, or if it will happen gradually like the way Christianity has moderated itself in the west very slowly over centuries. I'm hopeful anyway.

They have been doing annual rallies for a while - surprised this got some mention in MSM

The Unbelievers is a solid documentary that highlights that gathering.

Would you be teaching counter arguments against religion? Or just that some folks believe in nothing?
Both and the history of atheism. Also notable atheists throughout history. I'm not talking about a whole class devoted to the subject just a brief go over of the subject.

I don't think a coalition could really form with this group at least in the sense it is now because it's mostly a counter culture cause. Maybe they could all agree on certain issues like scientific research funding but outside of that, do they really all have the same political leanings besides not believing a god? Theyd need to work on a clear platform which I guess this is the start of with the DC rally

I agree with this but i am still astonished by the level of faith based reasoning that permeates the American landscape. The fact that in your history you've had fewer than 20 members of congress or senate identify as atheists - No US president and your population as a whole trusting rapist more than atheists is a real...concern.

Also, how do you teach atheism? Its something people come to their own accord by being introduced to logic and reason.
