arguing for second place...
who cares?
who cares?
Hey, this is Sherdog, it's not for the painted heart! To make my point with a more mature vernacular, there is absolutely no version of Hughes that could deal with the current level of wrestling and striking that Woodley possesses. It is that simple.
Matt Hughes tossed people around like rag dolls. He set the standard for wrestling to finish in early MMA.I think Woodley solidifies the spot as soon as his next title defense. In a head-to-head fight between both fighters in their primes, Woodley would demolish the shit out of him.
Is this even a debate? Hughes has a far more accomplished career as a champion and as a winner in general. How could you even make this comparison??? Hughes has more title defenses and beat GSP and Penn. Keep in mind that two of Tyrons defenses were a draw and split which he arguably could have lost both. His Till win was nice but who knows where Till's skills are at because I thought he clearly lost to Wonderboy then got thrown to the wolves. Matt beat a lot of established fighters during his era. Tyrons career doesn't stack up to Hughes.Regardless of what some are saying, I don't think Tyron has an argument for GOAT WW yet. That spot still has to go to GSP. But how about 2nd greatest WW of all time? How does what Tyron has done up to this point stack up against what all Matt Hughes did in his career? This isn't a "who would beat who in their primes?" thread. But we can talk about that if ya like. But it's more of a "who did more in their career?" thread. And yes I realize Tyron isn't done yet. I'm just saying at THIS point....
....What do you think?
? Have you seen the guys Hughes has beat
BJ Penn at his best , GSP, seam sherk, Carlos Newton etc..
Good question. Back then I was in awe of the fighters so I held them in high regards. But looking closely, Newton, Sherk, Trigg, GSP, Penn were big fights for him. 2 of them were LWs who moved up and he lost to 2 of them. The landscape was different then. Lytle late in his career was a big achievement too. Royce was what it was.How does the division stack up against the division Hughes had to fare against?

The only reason I consider it a dispute is because I think twood has the potential to put together quite a resume with a few more key wins
I'll agree 100% with this fine point.Opinions are like assholes.
Nicely doneEat a Snickers, SFF.
At least this ain't a Conor thread.
Colby Usman, then after that the only options are super fight and GSP. If he throws together enough to become a super fight draw it's gonna make sense for GSP to fight him. That's when it'll be interesting and he'll potentially enter the GOAT WW discussionI'd be inclined to agree if there were actually key fights available to him
Who is left? Colby and usman ...
Two of the top 10 WW fighters aren't even currently in the UFC
GSP im going to give an asterisk too.
...and GSP..well, he came back to convincingly beat matts ass.
It doesn't. BJ Penn, Royce Gracie, Frank Trigg, GSP, Sean Sherk (although undersized), Carlos Newton 2 times. Looking at how things turned out for them might lake someone ignorant think those fighters aside from GSP weren't good but that's not the case. He took down Gracie and completely out grappled him and let go of an armbar because he said Gracie was going to let it snap instead of tap so he punched his face in.How does the division stack up against the division Hughes had to fare against?
AFTER getting finished in the first round. GSP was doing great in that fight. But let's be real, it's not like he lost a close decision. He got tapped in the first round.

I'm amazed that people are saying this. His his wonderboy fights can be a wash. Hughes was slamming and bashing people's face in when they were at the top of his division. Even towards the end of his career he had a decent run against good guys.Did you start watching mma in 2010 right a round the time Hughes retired
Hughes at his best was a monster, far more aggressive than Woodley
Prime vs. Prime Hughes wins
