Sanders fairs much better than Hillary as a General candidate because of he draws from the far-left, the youth vote, and the vague-anti-establishment vote that will go disproportionately to Trump in a hypothetical against Clinton. And all three of those demographics are going to have very low turnout for Clinton. Sanders would retain a much higher percentage of Clinton supporters than vice versa.

While I would still favor Hillary on the basis of Trump being too erratic, she's drawing from the pool of lifelong unquestioning Democrats that's diminishing while Trump is pulling from a surging anti-establishment Republican/Independent pool that is breaking turnout records.
