“As the NBA continues to struggle to attract the sort of viewership it had last year, the UFC is seeing the opposite happen.

Despite meaningful postseason basketball being played on a daily basis, NBA Playoff viewership has dropped from 2.39 million average viewers in 2019 to 1.68 million in 2020. That is a 30 percent decline.

Meanwhile, the UFC’s four preliminary cards since the promotion returned from its COVID-inspired hiatus have done an average of 1.17 million viewers across ESPN and ESPN+. That number is up 30 percent from what pay-per-view preliminary cards did in 2019.

Mind you, UFC pay-per-view preliminary cards largely feature unknown or past-their-prime talents. It is unsurprising that, on average, NBA Playoff games would draw more viewers. What is significant, however, is the fact that average UFC ratings are trending upwards at a time when the NBA’s are trending downward.”

edit: thanks for making this my most successful thread you guise!

No sports the same without the fans. Crowd reaction gets viewers to react as well. Fighting is slightly different though as if a casual sees a amazing 3 point shot with no crowd to cheer will be like meh but anyone sees a crazy ko and you get a holy shit reaction.

I know everyone hates pro wrestling here but it can be fun for a view here and there but if u watch a show now without the crowed its unbelievably terrible.

That’s because Dana refuses to sell out with political SJW virtue signaling during UFC events.

NBA as a game needs a crowd (shows the weakness of the game)

Fist fights no need crowd (Uber sport confirmed)

A large part of real(mainstream) sports is the spectacle that goes with it, especially in America where everything is exaggerated. Not surprising the NBA(corona edition) is failing.

fighting is a primal thing and won’t be effected by a lack of crowd at all, if anything it’s more entertaining as we can hear everything going on in the cage.

I’m a huge basketball fan, and my team is in the playoff but it’s not the same without the crowd cheering the teams on. Also I think they’re losing a decent amount of viewers due to their full out plastering BLM everywhere. Also the teams are boycotting the Jacob Blake situation. It’s a mess right now.

It's slightly tainted but not much. Hearing a reaction to a huge ko or great offensive moment is amazing but yes you are correct as a whole you dont need a crowd to get you personally vested.

Not sure why people in this thread are talking about crowds, there were barely any real crowds in most NBA regular season games. It’s 100% because of the political agenda in the broadcasters and promotion, it’s everywhere in the NBA, to the jerseys to the commentators, it’s insane. The UFC started as a politically incorrect sport and Dana has preserved that.

WWE is dying a slow death from COVID. No crowds is a killshot to the business.

Ill watch the NBA when there are like 4 teams left. No interest until it really matters.

Truly is. Out of all "sports" to not add a crowd noise I'm surprised they didn't as well as use stock crowd reaction to big spots. I bet it would help. Having no crowd there though shows the true lack of quality

Yeah that pisses me off. If Luka was the one who said it, the NBA would suspend him right away. People would be calling for him to be banned and would always be deemed a racist regardless if he apologized or not.

Folks are just ready for the finals after all this time. These playoffs are also missing GSW, who carried the league the last few years. Personally, I’m only truly interested in LAL vs LAC. The bubble is here to see if Lebron secures another chip.

Being the only sport in town when it was probably brought an influx of new fans.
