Let's say you're on a first date. (or any date)

She's beautiful, smart, easy going. You like her, and she likes you. There's chemistry. But she's a little shy because she hasn't dated in a while.

Both of you sit down at a restaurant table and make small talk & exchange pleasantries. The waiter comes and takes your order, which will probably arrive in about 20 minutes, then the waiter leaves.

You can feel the silent awkwardness coming while you're sitting face-to-face with your date. What do you say to break the ice? What do you say?

you ask her about herself. even the most shyest person in the world will have stuff to say about themselves

First post nailed it.

And if she's interested in you, you will find she's asking you a ton of questions about yourself. Her posture will be opened up and facing you, she will stare at your mouth more often, and play with her hair or fidget with some other thing while she's listening. She will also start touching you, maybe your arm, your shoulder...your back...

If she's angled away from you, arms crossed looking elsewhere while you talk, and generally not progressing the conversation much...you don't need to bother asking for a second date.

usually anything you should not say

start off talking about porn, maybe mention an ex, make an awkward joke, offer her bud and if she says no still go outside and get blazed by myself, mention my various criminal convictions,
when any of that stuff puts them off pretend like you forgot her name to try and get the power back.

fyi i have done all of the above on dates

Get her to talk about herself and be a good listener. She should be talking 80% of the time if you're doing a good job of this. Also, be a little unpredictable with your questions and surprise her.

Anything that gets her talking about herself.
Women always want to talk about themselves.

Ask her how many guys she's slept with. For the remainder of the date don't look at her in the eye as if you're disgusted no matter how low or high the number she gave. Don't pay for the bill and leave her at the restaurant.

Just kidding. Be yourself, tell her you train UFC and give her your opinion on self defense, teach her the butterfly guard.

I begin the conversation by telling her how large I am below the equator and how she won't walk right for a week after tonight . Then I excuse myself with a charming transition phrase such as "I'll be back in half an hour, I need to have diarrhea."

Once that is clear, I come back and complain about hand washing policies before ordering us some cheesy garlic bread to share. And to top it off, I order the most expensive thing on the menu and leave after a few bites without paying and leave my number on the table.

60% of the time, it works, every time.

You're already talking to her. Why would you need to break the ice?

Don't get weird and interview her. If you learn the art of having a conversation as if she was a friend then things will go a lot smoother. Assume familiarity

Ive never gone for a meal on a first date, too many potential fuck ups.

Just talk to her about her visible physical flaws

Anything except religion and politics.

I don't know what to say, but if she takes to long to eat, pick up her meal and throw it in the damn trash. She's done eating when YOU decide she is done. Don't let her play you. To many chicks try this and are always impressed when you show your dominance.

I just stare at them without moving a muscle in my face.

Go to a movie first then talk about the movie. If you didn't go to a movie first, ask her if she's seen any good movies lately. You could talk about television shows like Game of Thrones. It allows you to get to know each other without talking about yourselves right away.

I usually start with a good chain of questions

-How's your day/week?
-Have you been here before?
-How long did it take you to get here?
-Where do you live? How long have you lived there?
-Where did you live before? Why did you move?
-Do you plan on moving somewhere else?
-Is your family here? If not, where are they?
-Do you have siblings? Are you close?

and in between, I'm also answering my own questions when I feel it's applicable..

Next is usually job and education BS:
-So what do you do? Did you fall into it or is it an area you studied?
-Where did you study? How did you like it? Was it what you originally wanted to study?
-How long have you been working there? Do you like working there?
-Is there anything that you would like to do instead?

Next is usually general interest/activities, then I go into food, weather, music, and travel.

Now, if there's a big pause in the conversation, I usually go between 5 different subjects:
-What she is wearing
-The most recent holiday
-Mother and father occupation
-Pets

Last resort topics:
-Dream vacations
-Physical compliment
-What would you do if you won the lottery
-The weather specific to someplace other than where we are
-Religious views
-Ask her to ask you questions
