Arnold Classic...roll call

I chose not to go. Our school is taking a good anmount of competitors and we should be able to win a few medals.

I am driving up from Lexington, KY.

How is this tourney run and how long does it last?

Anyone have any experience competing?

How is the competition? I will prob be doing whatever weight class is 195 intermediate gi and no gi.

This tournament is never run well. The venu is always too small. Its so crowded every year that you can't even hear your matches being called.

NAGA does their best, but be prepared to be there till 7-8pm if you have any higher belts with you. They do no-gi first and it takes forever to get through the beginner divisions. They have higher belts go last in the gi, and some have had to wait until midnight in the past.

Overall the competition is good, but its always been poorly run.

I'll be going. Novice no-gi (first time doing no-gi... ever...) and white belt gi. I've only gone to one other tourney, and it was locally run so I knew half the people there.

Any suggestions for this one?

good luck akdms.
Although I've never competed, I do know it's a loooong day.
The venue itself is great, but yes a bit crowded.
My friend Eric Fankhouser is an Animal Pro Bodybuilder. They have a huge fenced in cage there. That's where I'll be most.
If you're there for the weekend there are some kickass after parties. I got to rock out with Tim Sylvia and Jose Conseco...pretty cool.
You'll see some freaks there but it's all part of the experience.
My advice is don't start drinking and eating every sample handed to you. If you're competing the last thing you want is to be hopped up on a kilo of ephedrine with the shits!

I'm going.

180's Masters blue belt and intermediate. I'm a white belt, but have been training for 16 months many days a week.

It's like a death camp in the convention center. The place is HUUUUUUUUUGE but there is literally 100,000 people in there for all the different events. They have all the bodybuilding/fitness/supplements/expo as well as gymnastics, fencing, ping pong, mma, muay thai, weight lifting, etc competitions. You will see plenty of hot chick booth babes and giant muscle men.

The grappling is in the main giant convention center room where the expo is going on. Everyone crowds around the mats. It's very difficult to get on and off the mats whether you are a competitor, coach, or photographer. It's also hard to hear them call divisions on the loudspeaker. You will want to stay pretty close to your mat to see how fast things are going. This is also true because NAGA frequently has been moving divsions around to speed things up.

Make sure to bring flip flops as a huge number of people go to the bathroom with bare feet and then come back on the mats. Sick.

If you are coming as a team, I would get their fairly early saturday so you can find a place to put your stuff. Space is at a premium. Besides, all the negatives...it's definitely the biggest and toughest tournament in the midwest! I'm excited!

Blew my shoulder out...so im out this year...next year ill go..but goona stay home with the fam this year.

question

I have a friend considering this as his first tourny. Good or bad idea for a first?
I'm thinkin no just because of the overall craziness and stiff competition.
He would be a novice adult no gi.

Damn--that sounds crazy...

How's parking/transportation going to be? To save money I reserved a room at the Days Inn, which is like 15 minutes away, rather than the hotel that the NAGA site recommended. It was $53 for the room, vs $109 at the Holiday Inn that has the shuttle.

Also, how many people usually compete in each division (especially the novice/white belt)?

The Arnolds use to not be run very well but that was when Relson ran it, since NAGA has taken over they have at least put some effort in. Its two days; adults gi and no-gi on Sat and the kids divisions on Sun along with a Jorge Gurgel seminar. Bring some light food make sure you get there on time and just try and enjoy yourself before you compete in case you do have to wait, however since the kids divisions are on a seperate day it shouldn't be to bad. The big problem is going to be parking, all I can say is try and get there early and good luck with that.
I'll be there coaching but I'm still recovering from a broken ankle so sadly I won't be competing.

Parking garages will be packed and expensive to use (prob $10-$15). The roads surrounding the convention center will be crazy. You should have at least 10 people in both your divisions depending on your weightclass.

I actually think parking is the easiest part.
There are probably 6 or so parking garages in the vicinity...not cheap though...probably $15 or $20 for the day.
My advice though is make sure you write down where you parked...specifically!

Im going but i just hurt my foot the other day so not sure if im going to compete yet but i hope it heals up in time.

I'm hoping to be there to support some other guys from my school, but I'm not ready to compete (I've only been training for about a month).

I went last year as my first comp. I had a blast! If he has a good attitude and goes to have fun and learn then he should go. If he will be mad for days if he loses, then maybe he shouldn't.

It totally depends on who shows up and your weight. Most divisions have 8-20 people in them. A few have had 30+ that I have seen!

Some of the parking garages are quite far away. We struggled to remember where we parked after being in the convention center for like 15 hours last year.

Is it any better run? I was there about 5 years ago and there were guys that still hadn't competed at 2:00a.m the next day!

I will be there but not competing this year.
