Armed cops at weigh-ins? WTF?

It seems like something relatively new. I don't remember seeing cops with six shooters on their waist and I have to ask, is having a gun really necessary?.....Even when a ruckus has been started, there is no way in hell that ANYONE could or would draw his weapon and hit his target.
More importantly, the worst that could happen when all hell breaks loose is, someone gets beat up. No one should die!
I just don't see the reason for it.
Can anyone shed light on when this practice was added to the mix and WHY?

There was a weird threat about shooting Connor. There are mentally ill people with guns out there, look at what happened to Dimebag Darrell on stage in Ohio, it took a long time for a cop to get there and put the shooter down.
