Fukushima has been said to have reached across the pacific to American shores. In 1986 Chernobyl left a fallout over half of Europe which it still hasn't recovered from today. Three mile island while not as bad did release a significant amount of radiation. Then we have an entire era of nuclear testing and experimentation. Nuclear bombs detonated in the sea and upp atmosphere. A perhaps unknown number of nuclear devices detonated (and in all likeliness still being detonated in some regions) all across the world. The effects of Hiroshima and Nagasaki can still be seen today. By all appearances we have released enough nuclear radiaton into the atmosphere that we are living currently in a very real nuclear fall out.

And never mind fiction. The mutants you see in post apocalyptic fiction have been proven to be very real - two headed dogs, people born with three arms and all kinds of other mutations. Mutated fish are becoming the norm today. There is some speculation that the world visualized in the Chernobyl set S.TA.L.K.E.R. might not be so far from the truth. Given the unstable political climate, increasing natural distastes and a high degree of neglect seen in many nuclear facilities it's not hard to see further problems arising in the future.

There are trace elements of radioactive material since the first above ground testing.

However the levels are very low, well below any safe standard unless you are at certain areas where accidents have happened.

There have been a long more accidents that you have no idea about including medical equipment.

The Russians have fucked up a lot more shit then most people know.

But in general most people that claim the sky is falling have no idea what the hell they are talking about.

The first thing you ask them is what levels are they talking about and what isotopes are they talking about.

I've been in the nuclear program for over 30 years, the repair and maintenance side.

the hundreds of nuclear tests are nothing compared to the reactor meltdowns

Yeah, those bombs made Japan an inhabitable nuclear wasteland. No, wait...

A bit like comparing a petrol truck explosion to a main oil leak there

it's a bit like comparing a gas truck exploding to a major oil leak. Or I don't know, a petrol truck spilling on the highway to a leaking oil well.

Yeah, I don't think a layman is going to have much specific knowledge of isotopes, half life, levels, etc.

I used to fish below a nuclear plant, where they released warm water. Caught several deformed walleyes and saugers . I let them go :)

Yea but that is not true, look at all the above ground testing and the release then compare to the reactor accidents and their release.

Not that at least two of them didn't have a significant release but not the airborne that above ground testing has had.

This is not even getting into the accidents with refinement and the harm done with nuclear medical equipment accidents.

Hell Russia has a lake that on the shore like has a 600rm/hr dose rate due to their refinement and poisoned the ground water then never told the people.

By the way 600rm/hr is deadly 100% within 30 days.

They don't release primary and monitor the secondary water so the water is not contaminated.

I'm sure it was coincidence, though I've never caught deformed fish anywhere else.

You may be on to something. Could this be the real reason for Donald Trump being like he is?

You were fishing in what is call the "the hot ditch".

It's water the is used to cool the primary water in a condenser.
The primary is a sealed close welded system.

The secondary is monitored before release and they would have to have a breach in the primary loop in the condenser to contamination the secondary and they would know it.

It's not radiation, it's the heat which causes deformed fish.

when you say acceptable levels are you talking the old lower acceptable levels or the new post-fukishima jacked up acceptable levels?

This could be true and also the warm water cold cause all types of bacteria growth which could effect the fish and other wildlife.
