Fukushima has been said to have reached across the pacific to American shores. In 1986 Chernobyl left a fallout over half of Europe which it still hasn't recovered from today. Three mile island while not as bad did release a significant amount of radiation. Then we have an entire era of nuclear testing and experimentation. Nuclear bombs detonated in the sea and upp atmosphere. A perhaps unknown number of nuclear devices detonated (and in all likeliness still being detonated in some regions) all across the world. The effects of Hiroshima and Nagasaki can still be seen today. By all appearances we have released enough nuclear radiaton into the atmosphere that we are living currently in a very real nuclear fall out. And never mind fiction. The mutants you see in post apocalyptic fiction have been proven to be very real - two headed dogs, people born with three arms and all kinds of other mutations. Mutated fish are becoming the norm today. There is some speculation that the world visualized in the Chernobyl set S.TA.L.K.E.R. might not be so far from the truth. Given the unstable political climate, increasing natural distastes and a high degree of neglect seen in many nuclear facilities it's not hard to see further problems arising in the future.
