First we got Volk vs Islam, and now Leon vs Usman. Volk lost, Leon won, but they both found great success in countering takedowns from opponents that mostly had been steamrolling their opposition without much resistance. Granted, Volk and Leon just happen to be highly skilled champs, but it was special nonetheless.
Historically we’ve had certain techniques being introduced at certain points that fundamentally changed the landscape. Something felt special when watching Leon negate Usmans TD-attempts, enough to make me feel that we are at the beginning of a new stylistic era, one where clinch heavy wrestling (especially against the fence) is thwarted by new techniques and gameplanning.
