There's been no HW title fights since 2014 and it doesn't make since. The UFC will throw together an interim belt in a heartbeat but BFC goes three years without a HW title fight? I can't see any scernio where this was good idea. Shit one time Randy Couture fought 2-1 Brock Lesnar for the belt.

They should at least have some nobody there. Maybe he wins a few and builds a name for himself. Then you sign Fedor. They fight and guess what whoever wins you win!

I don't get it at all I know they are perfectly capable of putting on a HW championship it just seems like they choosing not too.

Explain this to me

They are a bunch of nobodies worth putting a strap around. All interchangeable parts. No one to build a future around. All about 40 years of age. Wait a bit longer and most of that division is retired.

It's definitely a bit odd, they could easily arrange a reasonable HW title match between Kongo and Mitrione whenever they want. I'm not sure why there has been such a long pause in the HW title picture but new signings like Nelson and Mir might be the impetus necessary to bring back the championship.

need to get some unknown guys with good records and hope they re solid and can build hype

It helps point out the clueless pretend fans who claim they watch and love Bellator because unlike the UFC they respect their titles.

A lot of truth right there.

Hard to make a case for any of them to have the strap and none of them will be around much longer either.

P.S.: Not having a HW champ probably saves Bellator a few bucks and I don't think they want to pay any of there HW's champ kind of money.

some things just dont make cents.

but who cares bellator doesnt have any great hw's anyway.

They need a GP and I think they have the guys to do it. Fix or release minakov situation but is not worth having a division hostage

My guess is they're waiting on one or two more big name signings for a Heavyweight GP.

I mean they have Fedor, Mitrione, Mir, Nelson, Kongo, Minakov. Add a big name or two in there and then use the likes of Justin Wren in the reserve fights. They could even do it now. Add King Mo and Bobby Lashley in there. Would be better with another big name signing though.

Sounds like a amazing idea. Its not like the last HW GP Coker ran destroyed his company or anything.........

No! His partners sell the company it wasn't because of a great gp to put on

I think in some situations, it's better to have no champion than an uninteresting champion.
No one'll take Bellator's heavyweight division seriously (and, since they're based in America where being taken "seriously" to one degree or another is paramount to going to the next level of success, that's important for 'em right now) if anyone of their current crop became a champion in their next fight.
They're waiting for either Minakov to come back (which probably ain't happening) or for one of their guys to get some more hype around him after a few more wins.
Would anyone really be excited about what Bellator's champion offers if Mitrione or Nelson were the heavyweight champion by year's end? Or Lashley, or even Kharitonov since he got KO'd by Ayala (who's a very good fighter, but with the Nelson loss he's way back in the title list)? Or Mir? Maybe they would if Kongo was matched up with Nelson and avenged the loss to win the championship, then he'd be on an impressive 6-fight winning streak with some very solid victories in that time, including a handy victory over current UFC darkhorse contender Alexander Volkov who's 3-0 in the UFC.
If Fedor had beaten Mitrione they would've had a championship-worthy fighter, but that didn't happen, and championship-worthiness isn't really determined solely by X beating Y (that's why Fitch didn't get his promised title-shot after he beat Thiago Alves in 2010.)
Wren would probably be a champion that could really get people into Bellator, since he's a good guy with a high finishing rate and some solid skills, and he does all the humanitarian work. But he's kind of a commodity because of that, and he has to be built up more before they risk throwing that away by having him fight one of their higher-up guys right now.

His partners sold the company because it was insolvent directly because he overpaid so many people for the GP and the Mayhem incident.

Minakov would be the ideal.

I have been thinking maybe Bellator should give him the money he is asking for just to bring him in for some credibility. I didn't support that a first. I thought "honor your contract like everyone else." The problem is he is not marketable. But having a guy like Mitrione or Kongo or Nelson as champ of a company that is trying to compete and be the equal of the UFC is laughable; everyone knows they are not top tier. Minakov on the other hand hasn't been "exposed" as they say.

Wow didnt even realise this before (i thought kongo or some russian was the champ)..

Bellator should do a hw tournament on ppv, but make it cheap. 8 man tournament on two nights, 15-20$ ppvs. Would buy (i only buy rizin ppvs cause they cheap and entertaining)

There are two advantages I can think of, though I don't necessarily believe Bellator are fully capitalising on them.

1) Having no champ might look better than having champ who can be written off as a "UFC reject has-been". We know how that one goes. Personally, I don't think fans really care that much about company image. I think people would enjoy seeing a Frank Mir title reign in Bellator, for example. It's all about whether or not they want to be seen as equal to the UFC or their own product.

2) Having no champ means they can make the fights they want. Sometimes a dream match will come along which just isn't justifiable if one guy is the champ and the other guy can't get near a title shot. The belt adds to entertainment value but it can also get in the way of making the most entertaining stylistic match-ups.

And possible number three, they can make a big deal out of crowning a champ with a GP win, but it seems like Coker doesn't want to go that route.
