Are the Wachowskis DONE?

I just ran across the early reviews for Jupiter Ascending. 53 on Metacritic; 36% on RT. So it's not looking good for their new sci-fi epic. To be fair, some people DID like it. The highest scores on Metacritic are an 85 and an 83 so it's not a blowout. But most comments typically sound something like this:

"It's blandly, often listlessly bad, check-the-blockbuster-boxes bad, just-out-of-film-school-and-shopping-a-tentpole-screenplay bad."

Now all that's left to do is to see if audiences turn out. After all, it's the money that the studios care about. But if they don't, what then? What does this mean for the Wachowski's careers? I don't think talent is the problem (Cloud Atlas is CRIMINALLY underrated) but what these guys need right now is a HIT.

So to get back to the title of the thread, if this movie totally bombs at the box office. . . Are the Wachowski's done?

If taking Ghost In The Shell's story, adding some high school grade philosophy and neat special effects was their best, they were done from the start.

They're a bit like M. Night. Shamalandingdong, one shot wonder.

Fuck y'all I got my advance tickets weeks ago!

This is a common misconception about M. Night and I have no idea how the rumor got started. Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs and The Village are all great. Hell, I even enjoyed The Happening.

I liked the first Matrix movie when it first came out. A lot of that probably had to do with the groundbreaking special effects though. I haven't watched many of their other movies but they certainly don't look like anything that would interest me. I'm kinda surprised that they are still given the opportunity to make big budget movies, but maybe they make more money then I realize.

Isn't one of the Wach's no long a dude?

Agree. Just hoping for them to prove me wrong and hit me with a really good movie.

That's why they're called The Wachowskis now instead of The Wachowski Brothers

Now that I think about it, I feel like I made a thread on that very topic a year or two ago.

I'm sure their career will be fine. As far as this film goes it's pretty much always a bad sign when production is so troubled that the release date is pushed 6+ months back or w/e it was. As the old saying goes, you can't polish a turd. They probably realized it wasn't going to work awhile ago but were too far into production and marketing to even think about backing out.

As far as Channing Tatum goes, he's so bland and forgettable that I can't even form an opinion on him. A bit like that other male lead guy that was in every movie for awhile then suddenly disappeared.

Sixth Sense was great, Unbreakable was decent. The Village, Signs and The Happening were shit.

Two-shot wonder

I'd search your post history to find it if I could, haha ...

About a week or so until I'm off the dubs !

i wholeheartedly agree.

I thought it was such an achievement on so many levels, not the least of which is the editing. Audiences not turning out for this one was some serious bullshit. As was its Oscar snub for Best Picture.

I'm sure their career will be fine.

Speed Racer (2008): Budget - $120 Million, Domestic Gross - $44 Million ($94 million worldwide)
Cloud Atlas (2012): Budget - $100 Million, Domestic Gross - $27 Million ($130 million worldwide)
Jupiter Ascending (2015): Budget - $175 Million (!!!), Domestic Gross - ???

I really suspect that if JA fails big time then they won't be seeing any more $100M+ budgets for a while.
