Are the GOT books worth reading after the show?

They are probably my favourite books and better than the TV show IMO. That being said, it's been a long, long wait for GRRM to finish the series and it may not get finished at all at this rate. I started reading them around 2006, I can only imagine how fed up the people who started reading from the very beginning must be.
