Are Pro Powerlifters Celebrities like other Athletes?

No body knows the names of powerlifters in my school and workplace except they knew Ronnie Coleman/Jay Cutler and Arnold off course. Just because powerlifters have instagram profiles doesn't mean they are celebrities even if they have a good number of followers. What makes one a celebrity or a star? In UFC, almost everyone is a celebrity.

Outside of the sport, no one gives a shit about powerlifters

Case in point, none of these dudes knew who Cailer Woolam was and his ass just pulled 950lbs at the Kern Open last weekend

Why would they be celebrities? they dont entertain people around the world. I thought people do powerlifting for themselves. If you are after fame and money you searching in the wrong sport.

People see Mark Bell and think powerlifters are celebs. He’s famous because his brother made a movie and then he made powerlifting equipment on top of it.

Lol - not at all.

No one really cares except for some that are into the sport. Even when I was hardcore into powerlifting I didn't really care when I met many of the greats. The only time I was somewhat excited was when I met Coan and Karwowski at the same time in Vegas. Mike Bridges was conducting weigh-ins at a meet I did. Even though he's arguably the 2nd best powerlifter of all time I felt like I was just talking to another fellow powerlifter. On a good note they are all super cool and down to earth, except Karwowski yelled at me at the casino bar at like 5 am because I asked him a @woloo type question when he was probably hanging.

Can we shut down the troll?

I want to find out more of his story though. I would legit love to know what a day in the life of woloo is like. So far we have, what he benches, his very limited knowledge of UFC and strength sports, his deep love for strength sports, and he may or may not have a thing for underage black chicks. Honestly makes a slow day in the office more interesting.

LOL
He's obsessed with PED use.
I'd like to know his stance on the whole caster semenya thingy

I can only think of two powerlifters, both former, that might be considered "celebrities", Ed Coan and Mark Henry. Henry's bit of fame mostly comes from WWF/E. Comparing UFC fighters fame to powerlifter fame doesn't make any sense. UFC is a multi billion dollar company that has been on prime time network television and is now aligned with the biggest name in all of sports. There is nothing that even resembles that in all of strength sports, including crossfit. UFC is probably a top 4 or 5 sports league in North America, powerlifting can't even get into the olympics. It is like comparing MMA to boxing 25 years ago, they aren't even in the same universe. Is there even a professional status for PL'rs comparable Golf, Tennis, combat sports or other individual sports that have professional declaration?

My blue sky view of PLing is, its like this little niche sport where all the kids who were made fun of in school can succeed in.

I don't even like to think of it as a sport, it's more like a well organized hobby. For me it is something to do because I am now too, stiff, old, fat and or lazy to continue with team sports (as an adult the leagues are pretty lame), jitz, and weightlifting. Prior to sherdog I never cared for PL, the only in person exposure I got was guys benching in shirts to boards, which I thought was lame. It is interesting to see that woloo is slowly turning the sherdog S&C forum into a PL forum, it would make more sense for him to go to BB.com or something.

Yeah, even though I'm pretty involved with powerlifting, I still consider it a hobby not a sport. Always get a kick out of people that start a go fund me to raise money so they can go to powerlifting meets. Most of the time they dont raise any money because nobody wants to fund a hobby.

I see a lot of animosity towards the people who start gofundme pages for PL meets. I think its justified. No way am I funding your hobby.

I was heavily involved in PL from a meet director and volunteer perspective but now there's just too many meets to compete with and too little interest in fun non-sanctioned stuff. Everyone wants that INSTA world record post! I'm done with it, really. Lift for Kids was great while it lasted but at this point I'm not going to fight against every other charity meet, especially since Goodlife took the Lift for Kids name already... Shitty thing about that is a guy I know who was involved in Lift for Kids close to the beginning, who is a top level coach for Goodlife didn't defend the fact that name was already taken, and they could have easily partnered with me. BUT they're a giant corp who gives 0 fucks about the people they serve.

It is a fun activity and challenge for me personally, I am happy it exists. That is absolutely ridiculous.

Larry wheels or that jujimufu guy are kinda famous. My godfather recognized Larry wheels from a vid I sent him. He’s mostly on Facebook in his 50s
