How do you define A level athlete?

It's a meaningless term and means completely different things in different sports.
For wresting they are for basketball they're not.

The best players in the biggest sport in the world are all footballers (soccer) so if you want to define A level athlete by having what it takes to get to the top of the biggest sport in the planet then wrestlers aren't, basketball players aren't american footballers, baseball players and ice hockey players aren't either and neither is anyone in MMA or they'd be playing for Barcelona, Real, Liverpool, Man City etc......

No. Only football players can be A Level athletes. Adama Traore is B level and he would be UFC champion with a 10 minute Dana White Pep talk.

The best pic I could find quickly for ”a wrestlet”. Big Dan is as tall as Chad on his knees

    Correct.

As someone who doesn't give a shit about football (soccer) is this even true? It strikes me as insulting.

Football (soccer), like MMA, is a sport where physical advantages can be overcome by technical skill. I would suggest that is what makes Ronaldo and Messi great -- skill, not elite genetics.

This is of course in contrast to a sport like basketball where even a near infinite skill level can be beaten by a significantly less skilled player with better physical attributes.

an athlete is someone who can succeed at multiple sports not just one . it doesnt matter if they play professional soccer at all , if you can play soccer , basketball , football , mma etc up to 3 sports well then your an athlete !!! if your the Olympic wrestling gold medalist but strike out at a family softball game and cant make a layup ….. your a good wrestler not an athlete . its that simple

as a guy who's sports interests are almost exclusives soccer and martial arts, i love the parallels between two sports that on the surface are so different

and yeah, all this constant talk about 'A-level athletes' (always coming from americans as far as i can tell), shows how far MMA as a sport still has to go before it has an educated audience
it's a technical sport; the technician beats the athlete far more often than not

for the record, ronaldo is a genetic freak and top athlete in addition to his technical ability
whereas messi is the purest technician i've ever seen

It depends on what olympic team they wrestle for. Some teams are easier to get onto than others. For example Ghana's best ice skater may not be top 200 in the US, but in Ghana, that's Olympic level.

Overall though, wresters in the olympics are elite. Wrestlers tend to be good at a number of things that are universally applicable to "athletics" they are usually, fast, strong, limber, with good balance, good coordination, and good cardio.

The one exception being the ability to jump. You don't have to have a spectacular long or high jump to excel in wrestling.

By any measure I think you'd have to call them A level athletes.
