Are Macbooks worth it?

So my laptop is slowly giving up the ghost. 80% of the time it works perfectly and is as fast as it ever was but occasionally it shuts off by itself and it's got some wear and tear around the bottom with bits of plastic coming away. I've also noticed it steadily getting hotter at the bottom. It's a Toshiba and I've had it for nearly 5 years so it's lasted me pretty well.

I'm thinking of possibly buying a Macbook but I don't feel like paying Apple prices  so I'm thinking of going to eBay for a second hander. What are some things I should be looking out for? I notice there are a few older models like 2007's on there, are they no good? I don't really use my laptop for anything other than internet, photo storage and music.

Thanks

Why are you going to pay the price of a refurb mac when you can pay the same price for a normal new laptop?

You say your laptop is 5 years old and want something new, yet you're looking at 6 year old macs

Advertising is a bitch, huh?

No, you can get a new laptop cheaper than a second hand mac that will work just as good for you.

Hey frenzy,

If you only use your laptop for internet, photo storage and music I think your better off getting a new laptop, you'd probably get a good one for the same price as a second hand mac.

I wouldn't spend any money on a macbook but that's just me. From what you described you could get a pretty awesome machine for the price that you would pay for a macbook for your needs.

internet, music and storage. nothing too fancy.

what brand do you reccomend?

Lenovo has served me well and they can be picked up cheaper than other brands, my friend also has one and we both agree it's the best laptop we've had.

Then you have acer, dell, HP and Toshiba which are all fine, I've just had better experiences with Lenovo.

Asus is good also.

Lenovo & Toshiba are ballin laptops

Dell's used to literally run so hot they melted, and my old Dell laptop battery exploded on me. So yeah, there's that...

Ive had my MacBook for over a year now and it still runs like the first day i got it

Id recommend getting one but beware, the charger will fuck up and stop working at some point

It seems chargers for laptops fuck up anyway in my experience...might look at getting a new toshiba cos i've had nothing but good experiences with them anyway

Just get a decent laptop. If you don't like windows, look at Ubuntu as an operating system.

I had a few chargers break on my but it was my own fault, the wires would be constantly contorted and eventually a connection is bound to break.

Since I've started taking care I've had no problems.

Toshiba is a decent make so you should be fine with that, you should look around though, if you can get a laptop with a better spec than the Toshiba you were looking at, for the same price I'd go for it.

I've got a Macbook and really like it, but I do a lot of music editing. For your needs I would just get a PC. Who is that in your avatar picture btw? That picture is definitely familiar.

I have nightmares of my Macbook being stolen, it's the greatest thing I've ever bought.

If your machine shuts off spontaneously, try identifying your parts and checking out all firmware updates for the parts and read if the particular firmware updates address spontaneous shut downs. I had that problem with a desktop, and updating the firmware for one part fixed the problem, and the firmware description even said that was one problem the firmware update addressed. The F'ing tech support wanted to wipe my harddrive and reinstall the operating system. Nothing they suggested fixed the problem. The firmware update fixed it.
